ROCHESTER, NY- The Hartwick men's basketball team trailed by only four points at halftime but host St. John Fisher used a 12-5 run in the opening minutes of the second half to pull away and defeat the Hawks 77-60 on Friday night. The loss evens Hartwick's record at 12-12 and drops them to 4-9 in the Empire 8. The Cardinals improve their record to 16-8 overall and 9-4 in the Empire 8.
Kyle Bradley (Cornwall, NY/Mansfield University) scored 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting to lead the Hawks. He added five rebounds and two steals.
Anthony Keane (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) shot 6-of-12 from the field for 13 points while pulling down seven rebounds.
Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) added nine points and six rebounds.
Matt Petruccione (Saratoga Springs, NY/Bishop Maginn) scored eight points off the bench.
St. John Fisher was led by Justin Platta's 17 points as he shot 8-of-10 from the field. Chaz Lott added 14 points and six rebounds while Jason Norsen contributed 14 points and eight rebounds.
Lott started the game with a layup to give the Cardinals the early 2-0 advantage. The Hawks then went on a 7-0 run to go up 7-2 at 17:15.
The Cardinals would rally to tie the game at 7-all at 15:25. Hartwick tied the game at nine with 13:43 showing on the clock. Three more ties would follow with the final time coming at 5:23. Lott's second of two free throws gave the Cardinals an 18-17 lead. St. John Fisher would expand its lead to four points after Lott nailed a trey with nine ticks on the clock as the Hawks trailed 29-25 at halftime.
In the second half, a 14-7 Fisher run gave the Cardinals an 11-point lead, 43-32, at 13:15.
Christian Laputka's (Freeland, PA/Hazleton Area) three-pointer at 12:50 narrowed the Hawk deficit to eight points.
A 15-5 Cardinal run, however, gave St. John Fisher a 58-40 lead with 5:32 remaining in the game. The Hawks would chip the deficit down to 13 points after Bradley hit a three-point shot but the Cardinals would not let up as they led by as much as 22 points with 1:20 left to play on their way to the victory.
St. John Fisher outshot Hartwick in the game 56% to 40%. The Hawks had a slight advantage from beyond the three-point arc with a 41.2% to 38.5% lead. Hartwick was nearly flawless from the charity stripe as it converted 90% of its attempts compared to St. John Fisher's 64%.
Both teams had 30 rebounds. The Cardinals controlled the paint 28-20 and led in bench points, 22-16.
Hartwick will wrap up its regular season tomorrow afternoon against Alfred. Game time will be at 2 p.m.
