Hartwick Comes Up Short Against Alfred in Regular Season Finale

ALFRED, NY- The Hartwick men's basketball team came up short in its final regular season game of the season as it fell to Alfred 72-64 on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks finish with an overall record of 12-13 and 4-10 in the Empire 8. Alfred finishes 7-18 overall and 4-10 in the E8.

The Hawks trailed by two points, 64-62, with 1:27 left in the game following a basket from Kyle Bradley (Cornwall, NY/Mansfield University). After the Saxons' Gerald Colas converted one of two free throws to put Alfred ahead 65-62 with 59 seconds left, 'Wick had a chance to tie the game up with 47 seconds remaining to play but Matt Petruccione's (Saratoga Springs, NY/Bishop Maginn) three-point attempt was off the mark. After two more Alfred free throws made it a 67-62 contest, Victor Angeline's (East Brunswick, NJ/Rutgers Prep) three-point shot with 32 seconds left bounced out and the Saxons converted five of six free throws in the final 28 seconds to pull out the win.

Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. Bradley scored 14 points and had a team-high 14 rebounds to go along with four assists and two steals.

Thomas Tsatsis led the Saxons with 25 points and picked up four rebounds, four steals, and two assists. Colas scored 10 points and added eight rebounds.

The first half was a tight affair as neither team led by more than four points. There were 15 lead changes and the score was tied five times. The Hawks took their largest lead of the game with 6:29 left in the first when Aaron Laing (Laurens, NY/Laurens) made the second of his two free throws to put Hartwick ahead 26-22.

'Wick held a 29-27 advantage at 4:47. Three foul shots by Tsatsis would push Alfred on top 30-29 with 4:23 left in the first half. The Saxons went into halftime with a 37-33 lead.

In the second half, Alfred went up 46-39 following a layup from Tsatsis at 15:33. Hartwick then went an 8-0 run and led 47-46 at 12:51. A layup by Jason Ruback would concede the Hawk lead to the Saxons at 12:14 and Alfred proceeded to stay ahead for nearly four minutes of game time.

Suderley's layup at 8:17 was the first of three ties that followed in almost two and a half minutes of game time. Bradley's jumper with 5:40 remaining to play gave the Hawks a 60-58 lead. Colas' second of two free throws reduced the Hawk lead to one at 5:01 and started a 14-4 Saxon run to close out the contest as Alfred came out with the victory. AU was 12-of-16 in free throws down the stretch.

Despite the final score, the Hawks did outshoot the Saxons on the day (44% to nearly 38%). AU was slightly better in three-point shots (23% to 17.6%) and was 73% from the charity stripe compared to Hartwick's 47.4%.

The Hawks led in the paint 30-24 and in bench points 21-18. Hartwick was successful on the glass as it pulled down 43 rebounds to 36 rebounds for Alfred. The 43 rebounds were the third-most in a game this season.
