MORRISVILLE, NY- The Hartwick field hockey team scored four times in the second half to break open a close game as the Hawks came out with a 6-1 victory over Morrisville on Tuesday afternoon. Hartwick now evens its record at 2-2 while the Mustangs fall to 0-4 on the season.
The Hawks struck first just five minutes into the contest.
Holley Reynolds' (Walton, NY/Walton) shot was saved by Morrisville goalie Nicole Gregg but the rebound came back to
Sarah Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) who took the rebound in for the score to give Hartwick the 1-0 lead.
The game would remain the same for much of the rest of the first half. In the 30
th minute,
Meghan Fay (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) drove from the top of the circle and hit a shot that passed Gregg and into the box to move Hartwick ahead 2-0. The Mustangs would get on the board with 53 seconds left to play in the half on a goal by Rebecca Quakenbush. Hartwick dominated the half in shots,15-2.
In the second half, Ryan scored on a sweep with an assist from
Jessica Ott (Katonah, NY/John Jay) to put 'Wick ahead 3-1 in the 41
st minute. Ott then scored one of her own less than seven minutes later when her shot deflected off a Morrisville defender and into the goal.
Kelly Kramer (Royersford, PA/Villa Maria Academy) tacked on two scores with one coming on a penalty stroke to complete the scoring.
Ryan scored twice on the day. Ott and Fay both tallied one score each with Fay's goal extending her scoring streak to three straight games. Reynolds tallied two assists and one defensive save.
Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) got the nod in goal and did not record a save.
Jilian Sabatino (Boonton, NJ /Boonton) came in the second half and had one save. Gregg stopped 15 shots for the Mustangs.
The Hawks travel to Rochester on Saturday to begin Empire 8 play when they go up against Nazareth. Game time will be at 1:30 p.m.
