ROCHESTER, NY- Host Nazareth scored twice in the first half and that was all it needed as the Golden Flyers defeated Hartwick field hockey 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in the Empire 8 opener for both teams. The Hawks drop to 2-3 overall while the Golden Flyers pick up their first win of the year and are 1-3.
Jordan Ritchie scored Nazareth's first goal in the 25
th minute. Later in the 32
nd minute, Kailee Coleman scored off an assist by Sarah Wazenkewitz to move Nazareth ahead 2-0. The Hawks were held to two total shots in the first frame.
Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) started for Hartwick in the cage and tallied five saves. Nazareth's Shannon Winney had four saves on the afternoon and Haley Potter picked up one defensive save.
The two teams finished even in shots, 10-10.
Jessica Ott (Katonah, NY/John Jay) had five shots in the game to lead Hartwick. The Hawks had 11 penalty corners to Nazareth's six.
Hartwick returns to Wright Stadium to host the currently #17 ranked University of Rochester Yellowjackets on Tuesday. Game time will be at 4 p.m.
