"We are delighted to again bring high-caliber Division I men's soccer teams to this year's event," stated Hartwick men's soccer coach
John Scott. "I'm sure that our local soccer fans will not be disappointed."
The Hawks have started the season 0-1-1 and are in search of their first victory. 'Wick battled back from a late 1-0 deficit to earn a 1-1 draw at Fairfield last Friday thanks to a
Will Broomfield (Brighton, England/Cloud Community College) tally. The team fell on Monday to #20 Syracuse, 2-0.
Hartwick hosts a trio of top clubs on the weekend in Robert Morris, Cornell, and Detroit Mercy. The Colonials beat the Hawks 2-1 on September 15 of last season in Moon Township, PA. The Big Red, which was ranked #22 in the NSCAA Preseason Poll, won its first 12 games last season en route to the Ivy League Championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Detroit Mercy won the Horizon League regular season title last year.
Robert Morris has one game under its belt in 2013. The Colonials lost a 2-1 decision at Rider on Sunday. Cornell will be playing its season opener Friday on Elmore. The Titans of Detroit Mercy tied IUPUI, 0-0, on Saturday to start their campaign.
"We won't be under estimating any of our opponents, that's for sure," assured Scott. "After two tough road trips to start the season we can't wait to play at home this weekend and we'll be giving it our all in both games."
Hartwick is looking for its 19
th Mayor's Cup title since the tournament's inception in 1976. The Hawks last took the cup in 2007.
'Wick's women's team managed to get one game in at the 10
th Annual Erinn K. Brozman Cup this past weekend after weather negated its opening match against Cobleskill. The Hawks responded from a first-half deficit as local product
Cami Cleaveland (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) scored in the second to secure a 1-1 tie against Marywood.
Matt Verni's Hawks go up against another strong field this season with John Carroll, RIT, and Oneonta State all vying with them for the title.
"The Mayor's Cup always provides stiff competition and this year's tournament is no different," said Verni. "John Carroll has been consistently competitive among the top programs in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Ohio is a hot bed for women's soccer, so that speaks to the quality they bring. RIT was an NCAA Tournament team last season and only continue to improve."
JCU lost its opening game of the season to Thomas More and looks to get its first win on Wednesday against Allegheny. RIT enters Elmore ranked 23
rd in the country. The Tigers are 2-0 after consecutive 1-0 overtime wins over Allegheny and Otterbein.
"We know we have serious competition ahead," added Verni, "and our training is critical both tactically and mentally this week.
Oneonta State serves as co-host of the women's tournament, hosting both games on Sunday at Red Dragon Field. Oneonta split on the weekend at the Kean University Cougar Classic with a 2-1 victory over Richard Stockton and a 2-1 defeat to the host Cougars.
