ONEONTA, NY- The visiting St. Lawrence field hockey team scored twice in less than four minutes in the first half and added two more scores in the second half as they defeated Hartwick 4-1 on Saturday morning at Wright Stadium. The loss drops the Hawks to 1-2 on the season while the Saints register their first win to improve to 1-2.
St. Lawrence scored quickly in the first frame as Samantha Haab passed to Lizzy Saward who scored to put the Saints ahead 1-0 just 2:44 into the game. The Saints would score their second goal of the game when Kate Higgins went top shelf to give St. Lawrence a 2-0 lead.
Following a timeout, the Hawks began to settle down. After O'Neil's shot at 28:24 was saved by Hartwick goalie
Jilian Sabatino (Boonton, NJ/Boonton), the Hartwick defense clamped down as it did not allow a shot from the visitors for over 16 minutes of game time.
'Wick had an opportunity to notch its first score of day in the 13
th minute but
Holley Reynolds' (Walton, NY/Walton) penalty stroke opportunity was blocked by St. Lawrence goalie Nicole Matos. Despite playing down a player for five minutes due to a yellow card, the Hawks kept the Saints at bay as they allowed just two shots in the final 8:06 of the first half.
Hartwick would soon get back into the contest early in the second half.
Megan Lefeber (Riverton, CT/Northwestern) was granted a penalty corner that
Meghan Fay (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) settled in and hit a shot that got past Matos and into the box to cut Hartwick's deficit to 2-1 a little over four minutes into the period.
It was as close as the Hawks could get as the Saints scored their third goal of the day just over seven minutes later. St. Lawrence tacked on one more score with 12:21 left in the game to complete the scoring.
Sabatino turned away three shots in goal for the Hawks. Matos stopped four shots for the Saints.
St. Lawrence had a slight advantage in overall shots, 10-7, and had seven of those on goal to Hartwick's five. The Hawks had eight penalty corners to the Saints' six.
Hartwick heads on the road to face Morrisviile on Tuesday. Game time will be at 4 p.m.
