ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick women's soccer team hosted John Carroll University at the annual Mayor's Cup on Saturday afternoon at Elmore Field. Despite holding a 1-0 lead for a majority of the contest, the Hawks settled for a 1-1 tie with the Blue Streaks.

In the first half, both teams played tough defense as neither squad could manage to register a shot early on. Hartwick finally got an attempt off just with less than 20 minutes left in the frame when Cami Cleaveland's (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) shot went wide of the goal.

The Hawks were granted a corner kick in the 27th minute and Kylie Thayer's (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) attempt sailed into the goal to give 'Wick the 1-0 lead. The Blue Streaks only managed to get off two shots in the half.

In the 62nd minute, the Hawks nearly scored their second goal of the day. Cristina Sicari (St.James, NY/Smithtown East) passed down the right field side to Angela Luizzi (Albany, NY/Guilderland), who had a one-on-one with a John Carroll defender, but the pass was too wide as Luizzi's shot went just left of the goalpost.

The Hartwick defense kept pressure on the Blue Streaks and goalie Hope Brown (Sherburne, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) made a couple of key saves to keep John Carroll off the scoreboard. The Blue Streaks, however, would finally get through in the 75th minute when Danielle Sharbaugh's shot deflected off a Hartwick defender and into the goal to tie the game at 1-1.

The 'Wick defense did now allow a shot from John Carroll for the rest of the half. The Hawks had two opportunities to win the game but both Thayer and Cleaveland's shot were stopped by Blue Steak goalie Haley McDonald and the game headed into overtime.

Both teams had one shot in the first overtime period. Hartwick had a perfect chance for the game-winner when Abby Wheeler (Chatham, NY/Chatham) passed to Allyson Daniels (Pembroke, NH/Pembroke Academy) in front of the goal but Daniel's shot went high and off the mark.

John Carroll outshot the Hawks 3-1 in the second overtime. Kristen Profeta headed a ball that Brown made a diving save on and with 42 seconds remaining, Brown prevented Andrea Regrut's shot from going on to help preserve the tie.

Making her first start of the season, Brown stopped eight shots in goal. McDonald had three saves for the Blue Streaks.

The two teams were even in shots until the second overtime as overall John Carroll led 13-11. The Blue Steaks had nine shots on goal to Hartwick's four. The Hawks had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Hartwick resumes play in the Mayor's Cup tomorrow afternoon when they face RIT at 2:30 p.m. at SUNY Oneonta's Red Dragon Field. The Tigers and Red Dragons faced off in the earlier game of the afternoon with Oneonta coming away with a 1-0 victory. Oneonta will face John Carroll at 12 p.m.
