ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick men's and women's swimming and diving teams both had strong efforts as the squads were victorious over Empire 8 rival Alfred on Saturday afternoon at Moyer Pool. The men defeated the Saxons 161-84 to improve to 12-2 and the women won 170-103 to move to 8-6.
There were seven different winners for the men's team on the day.
Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Hanahan) had three first place finishes in the 200 fly (1:57.12), the 100 fly (53.40), and the 400 IM (4:24.27) to lead the Hawks.
Brad Ranson (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) picked up wins in the 50 free (21.88) and the 100 free (48.18).
Matt Plunkett (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Cooper City) tallied victories in the 100 back (54.69) and the 200 back (1:57.69).
Other individual winners included
Luke Grunewald (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Acad) in the 1000 free (9:59.69),
Brendan Day (Westfield, MA/Westfield) in the 200 breast (2:21.82),
Chris Farrell (Charlotte, NC/Rocky River) in the 500 free (4:58.62), and
Ryan Cichielo (Cape Coral, FL/Cape Coral) in the 100 breast (1:02.67). Cichielo joined Plunkett, Detar, and Ranson in the 200 medley relay as the team swam to a winning time of 1:38.69.
In the diving portion,
Aaron Soden (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) took both diving events. Soden totaled 167.65 points in the one meter competition and 169.95 points in the three meter competition to claim wins.
The women were led by
Kaitlyn Campbell (Hanover Park, IL/Glenhard North),
Imma Rutigliano (Tillson, NY/John A. Coleman),
Clare Nelson (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley), and
Gwen Mathias (Sunland, CA/Southwestern Academy). All four swimmers posted two wins each. Campbell touched the wall first in the 1000 free (11:06.86) and the 100 free (57.25). Rutigliano secured wins in the 200 free (2:01.19) and the 200 back (2:17.20). Nelson was victorious in the 100 breast (1:11.54) and the 200 breast (2:31.73). Mathias won the 200 fly (2:19.37) and the 500 free (5:28.77).
Allison Agate (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) had a win in the 100 back with a time of 1:03.89.
Lindsay Bierwert (Leeds, MA/Northampton) took first place in the 100 fly in a time of 1:02.86.
The 200 medley relay squad of Rutigliano, Nelson, Bierwert, and
Kelsey Elliot (Cortland, NY/Homer) were winners in 1:55.76. Elliot joined Campbell,
Helen Merkley (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland), and
Rachel Bellis (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) in the 200 free relay with a winning time of 1:46.56.
In diving,
Lindsay Bowker (Bothell, WA/Inglemoor) claimed both events. She had a total of 214 points in the one meter diving portion and 242.50 points in the three meter diving event to post wins.
Both teams will host its final home meet of the season next Saturday against St. Lawrence on Senior Recognition/Parent Appreciation Day. Meet time will be at 1 p.m. at Moyer Pool.
