ONEONTA, NY- Visiting Nazareth shot nearly 52% (29-of-56) from the floor on the night and held the Hartwick men's basketball team to just over 37% (27-of-72) as the Golden Flyers defeated the Hawks 82-72 on Friday at Lambros Arena. Hartwick saw its five-game winning streak come to an end as its record stands at 12-7 overall and 7-2 in the Empire 8. Nazareth, which has now won six in a row, moves to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in the E8.
Jared Suderley (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) led 'Wick with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Joey Lufkin (Argyle, NY/Argyle) and
Kyle Bradley (Cornwall, NY/Mansfield University) both scored 10 points each with Lufkin adding four rebounds and Bradley grabbing seven boards.
Justin Pratt (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown) came off the bench to score eight points with both of his baskets coming via the three-pointer. He went 2-of-3 from the free throw line.
The Golden Flyers were paced by Jack Giles' 31 points. He was 11-of-20 from the floor and hit 4-of-8 three-point attempts. Giles also added six rebounds. Mitch Ford had 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Brad Ford chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The visitors led for most of the first half with the score tied just once. Nazareth led by as much as nine points, 21-12, at 10:44 following a jumper from Cody Sarkis. A 7-2 Hawk run reduced the deficit to four points, 23-19, at 9:05.
Hartwick would whittle the Golden Flyer lead to 29-27 at 3:40 after
Anthony Keane (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) nailed a three-point shot. The Hawks eventually made it a one-point contest on Suderley's layup with 40 seconds remaining in the half as 'Wick went into halftime trailing only 35-34.
The Hawks took their first lead of the game at 16:33 of the second half, 41-40, on a Suderley layup. Hartwick led 44-42 at 15:52. An 11-0 Naz run, however, put the Golden Flyers ahead 53-44 with 13:23 showing on the game clock.
'Wick kept pace with Nazareth and trailed by six points, 55-49, with just under 10 minutes remaining to play. It was as close as the Hawks would get as seven straight points from the Golden Flyers increased the Naz lead to 62-49 at 8:35. Nazareth led by as much as 17 points, 78-61, with 55 seconds showing on the clock before the Hawks outscored the Golden Flyers 8-2 in the final second to make the final score 82-72 in favor of Naz.
The Golden Flyers were on fire in the second half as they shot 15-of-27 (55.6%) from the field. Hartwick was good on 13-of-36 (36.1%) of its shots from the field.
Overall, Nazareth converted 8-of-19 (42.1%) of its three-point shots to 6-of-19 (31.6%) for the Hawks. Both teams finished even in rebounds (42).
Hartwick returns to Lambros Arena tomorrow afternoon when it hosts St. John Fisher. Game time will be at 2 p.m.
