PINE VALLEY, NY – Sophomore
Rebecca Reilly (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) scored twice and classmate
Sarah Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) added the game-winner with 2:05 remaining in the game as Hartwick's field hockey team edged Elmira 3-2 on Sunday at the Murray Athletic Center. The victory for the Hawks is their first in the Empire 8 Conference this season and snaps a five-game winless streak.
          Â
All of the day's scoring came in a 25-minute window in the second half. The Soaring Eagles would battle back to tie the score twice until Ryan's clincher.
          Â
The first half saw only eight shots in total. Hartwick's lone shot came roughly six minutes in from
Maxine Dunn (Peterborough, NH/ConVal) but it was saved by EC keeper Julie Hockenberger. Â Hartwick goalie
Yanna Boggio (Amherst, NY/Amherst) made all three saves on the Soaring Eagles' three shots on target.
          Â
Reilly broke the ice 7:53 into the second half, scoring on a rebound. It marked her second tally of the season.
          Â
Just 2:51 later, the Purple and Gold tied it on a Kourtny Schwerdtman goal. She finished off a pass from teammate Julia Derco.
          Â
Less than seven minutes after EC evened the match, Reilly put the Hawks in front once again with an unassisted goal at 52:06. But just under eight minutes later, the two sides were deadlocked once again as Katie Carroll registered an unassisted tally.
          Â
The match remained 2-2 for the next eight minutes with overtime looming after the Hawks battled through nearly 100 minutes yesterday against Washington & Jefferson. But Ryan came through with the big goal to finish the Soaring Eagles off with her third tally of the season at the 67:55 mark.
          Â
Elmira earned a pair of penalty corners in the final minute and got a shot off but Boggio was there to stop it for the last of her 12 saves on the day.
           Â
The Hawks improve to 15-3 against Elmira all-time. They have now won 10 straight against the Soaring Eagles.
          Â
Hartwick is off for the next six days when it returns to Empire 8 play. The Hawks travel to Houghton on Saturday, October 18 at 3 p.m.
