Fisher Pulls Away From ’Wick in Second Half

PITTSFORD, NY – Hartwick field hockey held St. John Fisher (6-2, 3-0 E8) to a one-goal lead after 35 minutes, but two Cardinal tallies in the opening 5:11 of the second half helped the hosts to a 4-0 win. Hartwick falls to 2-6 on the season and 0-2 in Empire 8 play.

The Cardinals controlled play for much of the first half. They would fire 19 shots at the Hawks with only a Caitlin Allen effort making its way past Hartwick goalie Yanna Boggio (Amherst, NY/Amherst) 5:09 into the match. Stacie Skidmore earned an assist. Boggio would stop four shots in the half and Hartwick entered halftime within striking distance down 1-0.

Just 26 ticks into the second half, the Cardinals got an insurance marker. Elizabeth Cusack scored the first of her two goals on the day for a 2-0 edge.

At the 40:11 mark of the game, Fisher made it three as Cusack found the cage with Gabby LaForce setting her up. Skidmore would add an unassisted tally with 8:05 remaining in the contest.

Hartwick registered 12 second-half shots but never was able to break through Fisher keeper Danielle Famolaro.  Claudia Stone (Akron, NY/Akron) had three shots for 'Wick. Rebecca Reilly (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead) and Mary Claire Houlihan (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) each fired two.

Boggio finished with eight saves in just under 62 minutes in the Hawks' cage. Jilian Sabatino (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) relieved her for the final eight minutes. Famolaro concluded the match with three saves for Fisher.

Next up for 'Wick is a non-conference match against Liberty League foe Vassar College on Tuesday, September 30. The match between the Hawks and Brewers is slated for a 4 p.m. start in Poughkeepsie.
