Box Score

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick field hockey held off visiting RPI (1-1) in the opening half, but the Engineers found the net three times in the second in a 3-1 win over the Hawks Wednesday at Wright Stadium.

RPI broke the ice at 47:13 and added its second tally less than six minutes later. Hartwick battled back to cut the deficit in half at the 55:29 mark but the Engineers would get an insurance goal 3:49 from the final whistle for the two-goal win.

The visitors had the majority of possession in the first half of play but the Hawks managed chances to score with both originating from freshman Claudia Stone (Akron, NY/Akron). With under 26 minutes left in the half, Stone drove up the right side and sent a pass across the goal mouth. Her pass, however, skipped through a pair of Hawks with neither able to get a stick onto it. With under 13 minutes left, Stone fired from the left side but was turned away by RPI keeper Hilary Fiorentino.

Hana Murphy and Cecilia D'Agostino combined for RPI's first tally. D'Agostino moved across the circle to the left side of Hartwick's goal and sent the ball back across into the middle. Murphy was waiting to slam her shot past 'Wick's Yanna Boggio (Amherst, NY/Amherst) for the 1-0 lead.

Five minutes, 54 seconds later, Angela Cascio finished off a scramble in front of the Hawks' cage to extend the RPI advantage to two. D'Agostino was credited with her second assist of the contest.

The Hawks refused to go down quietly and they needed just 2:22 to get on the scoreboard. Stone played a ball into the middle just in front of the RPI net. Freshman Mackenzie Bond (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) was there to get her stick on the ball which popped up and over Fiorentino and in to make it a 2-1 game. The goal marked the first for Bond in a Hartwick uniform.

'Wick nearly evened the game with just over five minutes left as sophomore Maxine Dunn (Peterborough, NH/ConVal), after a long run, broke in alone with Fiorentino. She would be denied a shot at the last second as RPI defender Chloe Hutchinson caught up with Stone and picked her pocket, bringing the ball out of danger.

RPI added a third goal with under four minutes left as Claire Cecilio finished off a rebound following a shot from Murphy which was stopped by Boggio.

The Hawks had one last chance with 2:25 to go as Dunn fired another shot at the RPI cage but Fiorentino was there for her third and final save of the evening.

Boggio would end the game with a season-best 20 saves in the game. She made 10 saves in each half including several acrobatic stops to keep 'Wick in the game.

Hartwick (0-2) will look for its first win on Saturday. The Hawks travel to St. Lawrence for a game slated for an 11 a.m. start.
