Hawks Rout Stevens 80-62 to Even E8 Record

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick snapped a four-game Empire 8 winless streak with a dominant performance over visiting Stevens Institute of Technology (7-9, 4-4 E8) on Friday evening at Lambros Arena. The Hawks opened up a 20-point lead in the first half and never led by less than 11 points the rest of the way in an 80-62 victory.

With the win, the Hawks jump over the .500 mark overall at 9-8 and they improve to 4-4 in the league and are now in a three-way tie for third place in the standings with the Ducks and Alfred.

Hartwick made a total of 14 three-pointers in the game which is their second-highest total of the season. Their .500 (14-for-28) shooting percentage from beyond the arc was tied for their second-highest mark of the campaign.

The five starters tallied all 80 points on the night for 'Wick with each player reaching double figures. Trevor Norton (Mullica Hill, NJ/Ursinus College) led the way with a game-high 24 points. He knocked down a College-high six three's in the game and he grabbed six boards.

Joey Lufkin (Argyle, NY/Argyle) and Justin Pratt (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown) each added 16 points in the game. Lufkin dished out seven assists and earned three steals while going perfect from the free-throw line (8-for-8). Pratt made 4-of-5 from three-point range and hauled down a team-best nine boards.

Matt Petruccione (Saratoga Springs, NY/Bishop Maginn) contributed 14 points with Matt Wilson (Shelton, CT/Franklin & Marshall College) adding 10 points and six rebounds.

"I'm proud of our team," said Hartwick head coach Todd McGuinness. "We have been struggling lately and our guys played tough tonight. We moved the ball well and Joey played his best game in a Hartwick uniform."

The two teams were tied at 5-5 just over two minutes into the game, but a 20-5 Hartwick swing over the next nine minutes gave the hosts a 15-point lead. A three-pointer from Petruccione pushed the advantage to 20 points, 39-19, with 2:58 left on the first-half clock. The Ducks would trim the gap to 13 at the break, 42-29.

The Hawks shot 53.6% from the floor in the opening half with seven three's. The Ducks also connected on seven treys in the first 20 minutes but they only made 4-of-13 inside the arc, shooting a total of 11-for-29 (37.9%).

Stevens got the first bucket of the second half to make the Hartwick lead 11, but a 13-4 'Wick spurt got the advantage back to 19 points, 54-35. The Hawks were in front by at least 15 points until a Patrick Barron three for the Ducks made the score 61-49 with 7:28 remaining. Stevens cut it to 11 points twice with less than six minutes to go but a 9-0 run capped by Norton's sixth three of the game handed the winners a 20-point edge with under three minutes left.

Barron was Stevens' top scorer with 21 points. Alex Lorenz finished with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Hawks have now won six of the last seven meetings with the Ducks dating back to the 2011-12 season.

'Wick is off until next Friday night when it visits Alfred University at the McLane Center.
