Hawks Fall to Nationally Ranked Stevens

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick won five events and broke three pool records but the Hawks' men's swimming and diving team fell to nationally ranked Stevens at Sally Griffiths Herbert '88 Aquatic Center on Saturday 153-109. The Hawks end their dual meet season with a 10-6 mark.
           
Senior Miles Blaney (New York, NY/NYC Lab School) won three events to pace the Hawks. He began the day winning the 200 free in a pool record time of 1:42.95. He added a victory in the 100 free (47.19), breaking a 14-year old pool record in the process. He capped his day, individually, with the top spot in the 500 free (4:48.20).
           
A pool record also fell for Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Hanahan). He swam the 200 fly in 1:55.57 to take down the 19-year old previous best. Detar also was second in the 100 fly (53.73) and third in the 200 IM (2:03.09).
           
Brendan Quinn (Raleigh, NC/Heritage) secured the other Hartwick first on the day. He won the 1000 free with a time of 10:03.95.
             
Matt Plunkett (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City) and Luis Santiesteban (Key Largo, FL/Coral Shores) each turned in a pair of second-place performances. Plunkett was runner-up in the 100 back (53.01) and the 200 back (1:54.28). Santiesteban was second in the 200 free (1:47.98) and the 200 IM (2:01.21). He was also third in the 100 fly event (53.96).
             
Brian Edmister III (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley) was third in a pair of events. He took third in the 100 back (55.73) and the 200 back (2:01.19).
           
Joe Mulvehill (Penfield, NY/Penfield) was third in the 50 free. His time was 22.25, just .31 from first. Edmister was fourth and Zac Whitenack (Watertown, NY/General Brown) was fifth in the event.
           
Blaney, Mulvehill, Edmister, and Plunkett were second in the 400 free relay. They finished the race in 3:15.17. Plunkett, Brendan Day (Westfield, MA/Westfield), Detar, and Mulvehill also combined for second place in the 200 medley relay.
           
Today's meet served as Hartwick Senior Recognition/Parent Appreciation Day. Blaney, Nick Kirkpatrick (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs), Danny MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, NY/Poughkeepsie), and Kris Sanders (Tillsonburg, ONT/St. Mary's) each were honored prior to the game for their contributions to the program.
           
Hartwick is off for two weeks until the UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Conference Championships which will be held in Webster, NY from February 18-21.
