Hartwick and Colgate Settle for Wild 3-3 Draw

ONEONTA, NY – All of the scoring came in a 36-minute span in the first half and both teams had chances to win it in the overtime periods, but in the end, Hartwick and Colgate settled for a 3-3 tie on Tuesday night on Elmore Field.

The Hawks were fortunate with 90 seconds left in double overtime when Colgate leading scorer Ethan Kutler, who had a hand in all three Raider goals, missed a penalty kick which would have won it for the visitors.

Hartwick got a quick start, scoring 2:52 into the contest. A service from the far flank from Harry Morton (Napier, New Zealand/Te Aho O Te Kura Pounamu) was taken down by David Styles (Bognor Regis, England/St. Phillip Howard) who left the ball for Hartwick leading scorer Jamie O'Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk). He one-timed a shot to the near post from eight yards out, beating Colgate keeper Ricky Brown for a 1-0 advantage.

Just under eight minutes later, the Raiders evened the match. Kutler slipped a pass into the box for Tyler Forbes, who scored on a shot just inside the far post for a 1-1 game.

Styles put the Hawks ahead at 20:13 as he took a through pass from teammate Nick Hills (Garden Suburb, Australia/U. of Newcastle) and slotted his shot past Brown for the Hawks' second tally.

The Raiders would tie it and then jump in front with a pair of goals 1:43 apart. Aram Ouligian headed home a Kutler free kick from 40 yards away to even the score at 2-2. Kutler then scored with a shot from the top of the Hartwick penalty area to give Colgate the 3-2 lead.

The Hawks were awarded a penalty kick with 6:02 remaining in the half. O'Grady slammed the spot kick into the net to Brown's left for his eighth goal of the season and a 3-3 stalemate at the break.

Hartwick had a couple of chances down the stretch in the second half. Mike Rood (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley) played a ball in for Wyatt Scott (Cicero, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) with 11 minutes left in regulation, but he couldn't get a solid foot on the ball and sent it wide. With two minutes left, Morton served a ball into the danger area from the near side to Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy). He did well to collect the ball out of the air, but his shot sailed high and the game would go to overtime.

Berry had an opportunity in the first overtime after a short pass from Rood, but his shot in traffic from 10 yards went up over the crossbar. Two minutes later, a service from Dean Fowler (Sydney, Australia/Colo) found Rood in front, but his shot was right at Brown.

Colgate had its best chance of the first overtime with 2:25 remaining. Kutler drove a shot from the right side of Hartwick's net that smacked off the crossbar and went straight down just in front of the goal line before being cleared out by the Hawks' defense.

Morton had the last chance of the first extra period with 45 seconds left. Berry chipped a ball for Morton to run onto. Morton got a foot to it, but his effort trickled wide of the post, sending the game to a second overtime.

The Hawks nearly got a fortuitous bounce with 4:30 left in the second overtime. A Colgate defender headed the ball backwards that left Brown no chance, only to have it glance off the crossbar before being cleared away by the Raiders.

Kutler was yanked down in the box with 1:30 left in the contest. With a chance to win it, he put his shot wide of the right post and the game ended in a 3-3 draw.

The Hawks finished the match with a 20-14 edge in shots. Both teams were even, 5-5, in the overtime periods.

Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) would make four saves for the Hawks in goal. Brown made five saves for Colgate (6-6-2).

Tonight's match was the 50th meeting of the Hawks and Raiders all-time. The Hawks control the series with a 38-7-5 record. 'Wick, however, has not beaten Colgate in its last five games since 2009 (0-3-2).

Hartwick (6-4-3) is back in action on Saturday in a critical Sun Belt Conference match with Georgia State. Both teams are the only unbeatens left in league play at 2-0. The Panthers are currently ranked ninth in the latest Southeast Region poll while the Hawks are tenth. Kickoff is 5 p.m. on Elmore Field.
