ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Stevens on Friday night in an Empire 8 volleyball match at Lambros Arena. After falling in the first two sets 25-20 and 25-23, the Hawks battled back with a 25-15 win in set number three. In the fourth set, the Ducks rolled 25-12 to close out the match.
With the loss the Hawks fall to 9-18 overall and 2-4 in the Empire 8. Stevens is now 14-10 and 6-0 in league play.
The Ducks jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead in the opening set. Hartwick managed to cut the deficit to one, 11-10, but could get no closer. Hartwick led by four points at three different times in the second set. The Hawks were in front 20-16 but the Ducks registered six straight points to go up 22-20. Hartwick tied the score at 22-22 only to have Stevens win three of the final four points to take a 2-0 lead.
'Wick led the whole way in the third set. Six consecutive points turned a five point lead into a 22-11 advantage for the Hawks. Kills from
Kayla Baril (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) and
Rosa Maun (Redstone, CO/Roaring Fork) followed by a Stevens' hitting error gave Hartwick the set.
The Ducks turned the tables on the Hawks in the fourth set. Stevens got the first six points to take control. 'Wick managed to get the lead down to six, 17-11, but the visitors rallied for eight of the final nine points to take the victory.
Baril recorded a team-high 11 kills and notched six digs for the Hawks.
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) added eight kills and tied for a team-high with 14 digs.
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) also had 14 digs for 'Wick.
Rachel Griffing (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) contributed eight digs.
Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) dished out a match-high 23 assists. She added eight digs. Maun picked up seven kills and four blocks, while senior
Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith), who was playing in the final home match of her career, had four kills and a match-high of five blocks.
Christina Sciarra led a trio of Ducks in double figures for kills with 16. Brianna Evans added 13 kills and Mary Tobin had 12. Sydni Horner led the way defensively with a match-high 21 digs.
Hartwick closes its Empire 8 schedule tomorrow at Ithaca. The Hawks play the Bombers at 11 a.m. followed by St. John Fisher at 1:30 p.m.
