ONEONTA, NY – Longtime head coach
Dale Rothenberger reached a milestone on Saturday as Hartwick's men's and women's swimming and diving teams went 5-1 at their home quad-meet.
Rothenberger, who is in his 31
st season as 'Wick's head coach, now has led the Hawks' men's program to 268 victories and the women to 233 for a total of 501 wins since arriving on Oyaron Hill.
The men went unbeaten on the day, defeating St. Rose (165.5-105.5), Utica (235-26), and Cazenovia (244-0). The women went 2-1 by beating Utica (255-24) and Cazenovia (237-52). They fell to St. Rose, 139-157.
Seniors
Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Hanahan),
Matt Plunkett (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City), and freshman
Aron Zhang (Douglaston, NY/Brooklyn Technical) each won a pair of individual races and combined for one relay win for the men.
Brendan Quinn (Raleigh, NC/Heritage) also was first in two races and
Joe Mulvehill (Penfield, NY/Penfield) was the victor in one race and he combined for a pair of relay wins.
Detar won the 200 fly (1:55.85) and the 100 fly (53.04). Plunkett was tops in the 100 back (53.01) and 200 back (1:57.42). Zhang took first in the 200 free (1:46.33) and 200 IM (1:59.50).
Quinn was the winner in the 1000 freestyle in 10:13.88. He also won the 500 free event (4:54.77). Mulvehill took first in the 50 freestyle (21.96).
Zhang,
Brendan Day (Westfield, MA/Westfield), Detar, and Mulvehill combined to open the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:36.99). Mulvehill,
Brian Edmister III (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley Central),
Dave Mauro (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls), and Plunkett captured the 400 free relay in 3:16.11.
Hartwick's women's team won a total of six events on the day.
Imma Rutigliano (Tilson, NY/John A. Coleman) and
Eleanor Hanson (White Fish Bay, WI/White Fish Bay) each won two individual events. Rutigliano swam to firsts in the 200 free (2:00.13) and 200 IM (2:15.11). Hanson won both butterfly events, taking the 100 in 1:03.36 and the 200 in 2:18.16.
Ally Agate (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) also secured a win for Hartwick in the 100 backstroke with a final time of 1:03.20.
Kelsey Elliott (Cortland, NY/Homer),
Bree Jefferds (Watertown, NY/Watertown),
Rachel Bellis (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua), and Rutigliano combined for a victory in the 400 free relay in 3:51.88.
Hartwick hosts its first head to head meets of the season next Saturday at Moyer Pool. Both Hawk teams host the University of Rochester beginning at 1 p.m.
