Women’s Lax Rallies for Overtime Win Over Elmira

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick's women's lacrosse team trailed 9-5 with 18 minutes left, but out-scored Elmira 9-2 the rest of the way in a 14-11 come-from-behind victory over the Soaring Eagles on Friday at Wright Stadium.
           
With the victory, the Hawks improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Empire 8. They also snap a seven-game winless streak against Elmira dating back to 2008. The Soaring Eagles fall to 0-6 and 0-3.
           
Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) tallied with 1:09 left in regulation to tie the score at 11-11 and send the game to overtime. Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) opened the scoring 30 seconds into the extra period on a free-position goal in what would prove to be the game-winner. She added another 1:54 later and Littleton tacked on the final goal off a feed from Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) with three ticks left to seal the win.
           
Littleton and Rosenberg each tied for a game-high with five goals. Littleton added an assist for a six-point day. Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) also contributed three goals for 'Wick.
           
The Hawks fell behind early as the Soaring Eagles scored five times inside the first six and a half minutes to gain a 5-0 advantage.
           
Hartwick got back into it with three goals in a 1:47 span to make it a two-goal game. Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties), Rosenberg, and Jweid registered the Hawks' goals. Rosenberg then made it 5-4 at the 12:58 mark.
           
EC tallied the final two goals of the half and the Purple and Gold entered halftime up by a 7-4 margin.
           
The two teams traded goals over the first 12 minutes of the second half. Down 9-5, Rosenberg, Jweid, and Littleton each scored within 3:52 of one another to make the score 9-8. EC got a little cushion with its 10th goal with 9:23 left but Littleton answered right back for the Hawks 54 seconds later.
           
Littleton tied the score from Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) with 5:55 showing on the clock. Marissa Mongillo put the Soaring Eagles in front briefly with an unassisted goal at 1:32 before Littleton forced the extra period with 69 ticks remaining.
           
The contest marked the first overtime game for the Hawks in 25 years when 'Wick beat Washington & Lee 8-7. It is only the eighth game that has needed overtime in program history.
           
Hartwick out-shot Elmira 30-22 in the contest. The Soaring Eagles had more ground balls (31-28) and draws (15-13).
           
Meagan Wright (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) led all players with five caused turnovers on the day. She also tied for a team-high with five ground balls and she added an assist. Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) also grabbed five ground balls. She made seven saves in the Hawks' cage. Jweid collected a game-high seven draws and she contributed four ground balls.
           
Elmira was led by Ashton Hogan and Moorea Spoljaric who combined for nine goals and two assists. Hogan had five goals and two helpers. Spoljaric also scored five times. EC goalie Lindsay Wargo made five stops.
           
Hartwick returns to action tomorrow against Utica beginning at 1 p.m. at Wright Stadium.
