Stevens Clips Hawks in Empire 8 Match

HOBOKEN, NJ – Host Stevens Institute of Technology (5-5, 1-1 E8) used a big third quarter to turn an 8-4 halftime lead into a nine-goal edge in a 15-7 victory over Hartwick in Empire 8 Conference men's lacrosse Wednesday at De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, NJ.
           
Hartwick's Conner Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) and Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) scored three goals apiece to pace their team. Sean Brown (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) also tallied for the Hawks.
           
The Ducks led 2-0 in the first quarter after four minutes and three seconds on goals from Andrew Scrutchfield and Ryan Giordano before 'Wick tallied on a Petillo goal with 10:17 left in the period. Stevens netted two more goals, but Petillo got one back with his second tally of the quarter with eight ticks remaining.
           
Stevens' Tommy Dawson scored back-to-back goals early in the second quarter at 13:58 and 10:01. Petillo and Long would then register consecutive man-up goals 40 seconds apart to trim the Hartwick deficit to two, 6-4, with 9:05 left before halftime.
           
Dawson's third goal of the quarter pushed the Stevens advantage to three and Scrutchfield made the score 8-4 at halftime following his second tally of the day with five seconds to play.
           
The Ducks took command in the third quarter scoring twice in the first 4:15 for a 10-4 lead. They added three more scores in the final 2:32 to extend the advantage to 13-4.
           
Brown and Connor McKeon traded goals to start the fourth quarter before Long scored consecutive goals for 'Wick 1:37 apart to trim the gap to seven, 14-7, late in the game. The Ducks tacked on the final goal of the match with 11 seconds remaining in the contest.
           
Long added an assist to his three goals for a team-best four points. Brown had a goal and two helpers for the Hawks.
           
Mike Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) made 13 saves in the opening 59:34 in the Hartwick cage. Sam Nowak (Lockport, NY/Lockport) played the final 26 seconds for 'Wick.
           
Rourke also tied Connor Hudson (Moriches, NY/William Floyd) for a game-high of five ground balls. Hudson also won 13-of-25 draws on the day.
           
Hartwick went 4-of-8 in extra-man opportunities on the day. The Ducks held a 45-20 edge in shots and a 40-25 advantage in ground balls.
           
Dawson led Stevens with five goals. He was followed by Scrutchfield's three goals and three assists. Kevin Rafferty and Alexander Kennedy combined to make five stops in the Ducks' goal.
           
Hartwick (0-6, 0-3 E8) next plays on Saturday, April 4 at home against Nazareth College beginning at 1 p.m. at Wright Stadium.
