Men’s Lax Closes Season With Loss to Alfred

ONEONTA, NY – Visiting Alfred University defeated Hartwick 18-10 on Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams. The Hawks end the 2015 season with a 3-10 mark overall and a 2-6 showing in the Empire 8. The Saxons improve to 12-3 and 5-3.
           
The game also marked Hartwick Senior Day. The Hawks' seven seniors were recognized proper to the contest.
             
Senior Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville Manlius) tied for a game-high with five goals for the Hawks. He also had a team-best six ground balls. Matt McCallan (Bay Shore, NY/West Islip) added three goals and an assist, and senior Sean Brown (Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) dished out a team-high three assists in his final game.
           
Hartwick opened the day with four shots in the first two minutes of the first quarter. Jacob Sasche (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) fired two which were stopped by Alfred keeper Drew Gardner, who kept the Hawks from taking the early advantage. Instead, the Saxons broke the ice after 3:10 and they added three more tallies for a 4-0 first-quarter lead.
           
The Hawks cut the deficit in half with back-to-back goals from McCallan with under four minutes left in the first period. Alfred netted the final goal for a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes.
           
The Saxons would add two more goals to start the second quarter. Simmons netted an unassisted goal at 8:35 to trim the gap to four, 7-3, but AU would tally four of the final five goals in the period for an 11-4 lead at halftime.
           
After David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional) scored early in the third quarter, Alfred out-scored 'Wick 5-2 over the final 11:27 to grab a 16-7 edge after three quarters. Simmons registered both Hartwick goals in the span.
           
In the fourth, the Hawks out-scored the Saxons 3-2 with Simmons, Sasche, and McCallan registering goals for Hartwick.
           
The Saxons held advantages in shots (41-24) and ground balls (52-32) in the game. They also scored on three of their seven extra-man opportunities.
           
Sasche and Bianculli finished the game with a goal and an assist each for Hartwick. Adam Goss (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) each dished out assists.
           
James Vogt (Stratham, NH/Exeter) contributed five ground balls in the game. Petillo added four. Kevin Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) and Fred Golini (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North) each caused two turnovers. Mike Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) made five saves in goal.
           
John Winchell led Alfred with five goals and an assist. Jake Lynch added four goals and four assists. Nicolas Wood chipped in with four goals and Tanner Morse contributed a goal and a game-high five helpers.
           
The game marked the final one for Hartwick seniors Simmons, Brown, Golini, Dylan Malloy (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park), Brendan Dieck (Lafayette Hill, PA/Delaware Valley Friends), John Gaul (Piermont, NJ/Ridgewood), and Connor Hudson (Moriches, NY/William Floyd)
