ITHACA, NY – Host Ithaca College out-scored Hartwick 10-0 in the second half to earn a 22-5 victory in an Empire 8 women's lacrosse match on Friday at Higgins Stadium. The Hawks trailed by a 12-5 margin at the end of the first stanza.
Hartwick was led by freshman
Ashley Werner's (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) two goals. She also tied for a game-high with three draw controls. Junior
Kia Ference (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady), sophomore
Megan Young (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville), and freshman
Colleen Jones (Ardsley, NY/Hackley) also made it into the scoring column for the Hawks.
Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) contributed a pair of assists.
The Bombers got off to a quick start as they netted two goals in the first minute of action. They added three more tallies and took a 5-0 lead after 4:40 of action.
Young scored Hartwick's first goal of the day at 23:52, but IC got the next three for an 8-1 advantage.
The Hawks would play the Bombers evenly the rest of the half with both teams scoring four goals over the final 14:50. Werner and Jones tallied for 'Wick 1:20 apart with Littleton dishing out assists on both scores to make it an 8-3 contest.
Ithaca (4-5, 2-1 E8) answered with three goals in 1:55 before Werner beat IC goalie Kimberly Presuto for her second goal of the day with 3:29 left in the half.
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) assisted on the play. IC responded 12 seconds later, but Ference closed out the first-half scoring with 41 seconds remaining.
The Hawks were narrowly outshot in the half, 19-13. Presuto would come up with six saves in the opening 30 minutes.
In the second session, the Bombers would score on 10 of their 14 shots of the half. Nine players would figure into the scoring for the game, led by Ally Runyon's four goals and two helpers. Niki Standera, Morgan Cadwell, Emily Peters, and Olivia Oppenheim added three goals each.
Defender
Caroline Stanford (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) led all players with five ground balls. She also tied for a game-high with three caused turnovers.
Ally Naja (Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) had four ground balls and two draws. Rosenberg finished the day with three draw controls and two ground balls.
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) added two draws, two caused turnovers, and two ground balls.
Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) and
Carla Centanni (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) combined to make seven saves in the Hartwick cage.
Presuto and Kelsey Fee made 11 saves total in the Ithaca goal.
Hartwick (2-6, 1-3 E8) next plays on Monday, April 6 at Mount Saint Mary College at 7 p.m. The contest is a makeup game rescheduled from February 23.
