Swimming and Diving Dominates in Wins Over Alfred

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick's swimming and diving teams rolled in a sweep of visiting Alfred University on Saturday at Moyer Pool. The 'Wick women improved to 6-7 in dual meets with a 204-86 victory over the Saxons. The men's team (11-2) won by a margin of 198-89.
           
The Hartwick women won 13 events, going 1-2-3 twice and 1-2 another six times. The men won 14 events, taking the top three spots three times and the top two on another nine occasions.
             
Imma Rutigliano (Tilson, NY/John A. Coleman) and Hanna Prendeville (Diamond Point, NY/Warrensburg) each won three individual events for the women's team on the day.
           
Rutigliano won the 1000 free (11:03.28), the 200 free (1:59.23), and the 200 back (2:16.04) events. She was followed by Rachel Bellis (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) in second and Meghan Barry (White Plains, NY/White Plains) in third in the 1000 free. Barry would also sweep the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Helen Merkley (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), who won the 100 backstroke in 1:04.38, finished second to Rutigliano in the 200 back.
           
Prendeville won the 100 breast (1:13.14), the 200 breast (2:37.93), and the 200 IM (2:20.72). Natalie Athans (Victor, NY/Victor) was second in the 100 breast and third in the 200 breast. Morgan Riggins (Austin, TX/Dripping Springs) was second in the 200. Bellis was just behind Prendeville in the 200 IM.
           
Maddy Hayes (Eagan, MN/Eagan) and Bree Jefferds (Watertown, NY/Watertown) also won events. Hayes was first in the 200 fly (2:25.14). She was followed by Lauren Cooley (Snohomish, WA/Glacier Peak) in second. Jefferds took top honors in the 100 free.
           
Hartwick finished 1-2 in the 200 medley relay. Rutigliano, Riggins, Hayes, and Jefferds were first in 1:56.68. Merkley, Athans, Cooley, and Prendeville took second. Jefferds, Hayes, Kelsey Elliott (Cortland, NY/Homer), and Bellis also won the 200 free relay in 1:45.67.
           
The men's day was highlighted by seven different Hawks recording wins and the 200 free relay team posting a Moyer Pool record.
           
Brendan Quinn (Raleigh, NC/Heritage), Aron Zhang (Douglaston, NY/Brooklyn Technical), Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Hanahan), Matt Plunkett (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City), and Joey Moffitt (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) won two events apiece. Joe Mulvehill (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and Zane Grunewald (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) also recorded victories.
           
Quinn won the 1000 free (10:12.67) and 500 free (4:58.90). Chris Farrell (Charlotte, NC/Rocky River) and Christian Burns (East Pembroke, NY/Pembroke) followed him in second and third, respectively, in the 1000. Farrell was also second in the 500.
           
Zhang was tops in the 200 free (1:48.78) and the 100 fly (52.01). Detar was second in the fly event. He would also finish first in the 200 fly (1:58.44) and the 200 IM (2:06.28). Quinn and Farrell were second and third in the 200 fly and Grunewald placed second in 200 IM.
           
Plunkett's wins came in the 100 backstroke (54.05) and 200 backstroke (1:57.35). Brian Edmister III (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley Central) was runner-up in both events.
           
Moffitt placed first in the 100 breast (1:03.19) and the 200 breast (2:18.94). Matteo Merodio (Kelseyville, CA/Kelseyville) was second in both swims.
           
Mulvehill (21.95), Grunewald, and David Mauro (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) ended up 1-2-3 in the 50 free. Grunewald got his victory in the 100 free in 50.20.
           
The quartet of Zhang, Edmister, Plunkett, and Mulvehill earned a time of 1:26.79 in the 200 free relay to break the College's Pool record, which was set two years ago by a team from Alfred. Brendan Day (Westfield, MA/Westfield), Mauro, Robert Marvald (Richester, NY/Brighton), and Quinn took second.
           
The Hawks were also first and second in the 200 medley relay. Plunkett, Moffitt, Detar, and Zhang won the race in 1:39.32. Edmister, Merodio, Mauro, and Grunewald placed second.
             
Hartwick returns to Moyer Pool next Saturday, January 23 against St. Lawrence. The meet serves as the program's Senior Recognition and Parent Appreciation Meet. Action begins at 1 p.m.
