Hawks Fall Short in 117-115 Double Overtime Thriller Against Ithaca on Senior Day

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick fell one bucket short in a game for the ages against Ithaca on Saturday at Lambros Arena. The Hawks fell 117-115 in double overtime as Marc Chasin's tip-in with 0.3 seconds remaining broke a 115-all tie to push the Bombers in front for good. Hartwick rallied from a six-point deficit with under a minute left in the second extra session on clutch three-point shooting, tying the game on a Jake Sinicki (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell) three with eight ticks left, before Chasin's put-back of Sam Bevan's layup attempt decided the result.

The loss leaves the Hawks 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the Empire 8. The Bombers up their season mark to 10-7 and 4-4.

The contest could not have been tighter with the lead changing hands 27 times over 50 minutes of action. The score was tied an additional 12 times.

Trevor Norton (Mullica Hill, NJ/Ursinus College), who tied the game with four seconds left in regulation to force overtime and drained two more in the second extra period to lead the Hawks' comeback, finished with a game- and career-high 39 points. He made six three-pointers in total, grabbed six rebounds, dished out five assists, and grabbed three steals.

Matt Wilson (Shelton, CT/Franklin & Marshall College) and Jake Sinicki (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell) each had double-doubles for the Hawks. Wilson had 22 points and a team-high 14 boards. Sinicki added 17 points and 13 rebounds with Joey Lufkin (Argyle, NY/Argyle) netting 19 points for 'Wick.

In the first half of play, neither team led by more than a point through the first eight and a half minutes, which set the tone for the rest of the contest. The Hawks used a late run to take their biggest lead of the half at the break, 48-40.

The Hawks' advantage grew to 11 points in the second half and it appeared they'd run away with the game. The Bombers responded and would take the lead by one, 80-79, with 3:39 left. 'Wick tied it before a Chasin layup with 26 seconds to go gave the Bombers a two-point edge, 86-84.

Another Chasin driving layup put the Bombers in front, 89-86, with 10 ticks remaining. Norton answered on the other end six seconds later with a triple at the top of the key with a hand in his face to send the game into overtime.

Hartwick used the momentum to grab a four-point lead early in the first extra period only to have the Bombers register the next five for a 94-93 lead. A Norton jumper with under a minute left put 'Wick back on top and he sank two from the free-throw line to push the lead to three, 97-94, with 24 seconds left. Matt Flood would be the hero for the Bombers as he drained a three in the corner with 1.6 seconds left to put the game into double overtime.

Hartwick led 104-103 after two Norton free throws with under two minutes showing on the clock I the second overtime. But, an Ithaca three-pointer and then two straight Chasin baskets in 33 seconds gave the Bombers a 110-104 advantage with 66 seconds remaining.

Norton made a trey to trim the margin to three before a Bevan layup made it 114-109. Norton then hit his second three in nine seconds to make it a two-point game, 114-112, with 24 seconds left.

After fouling, 'Wick caught a break as Bevan missed one of his two free throws to keep it a one-possession game. Norton got the ball up the court to Sinicki who drained his second three of the game to even the contest for the 12th and final time with eight ticks to go.

After Chasin's game-winning tip-in, the Hawks launched a desperation pass from under their own basket to the opposite free-throw line but it was batted away by Bevan as the Bombers escaped with the victory.

Hartwick would hit 48% (37-for-77) of its shots in the game, including 16 three-pointers. The Hawks would go to the free-throw line 37 times in the game, missing a critical 12 shots from the stripe. Hartwick also had an edge in rebounds, 49-43. Ithaca made 54% (46-for-85) from the floor and hit 13 from beyond the arc.

Norton made 11 of his 21 shots in the game. He also missed just one free throw going 11-for-12. Lufkin made four three-pointers in the contest to go with four assists and two steals. Justin Pratt (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingstown) scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds and Brandon LaForest (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) scored seven and added five assists.

Chasin led three IC players with at least 20 points. He finished with 29. Joey Flanagan had 26 points, including six three-pointers, and Bevan added 20 points, 12 assists, five steals, and four treys.

The game spoiled Senior Day for the Hawks. In a ceremony prior to the contest, Wilson, Glenn Gavan (Newton, NJ/Pope John XXIII), and Norton were recognized for their contributions to Hartwick basketball

Hartwick is back at Lambros Arena Wednesday night for one of their two final home games of the season. The Hawks tip-off with Utica at 6 p.m.
