Swimming & Diving Teams Fall to Nationally Ranked Stevens

HOBOKEN, NJ – Hartwick's swimming and diving teams were swept on the road by teams from Stevens Institute of Technology Saturday in Hoboken, NJ. The Hartwick women (7-8) dropped a 170-91 decision to the 16th ranked Ducks. The 'Wick men, who had not lost a dual meet in 2016, fell to the 12th ranked Stevens men's team, 179-83. The Hawks wrap up their dual meet season at 12-3.
           
The Hartwick women recorded three individual wins over the course of the day, all from senior Imma Rutigliano (Tilson, NY/John A. Coleman). She registered the first of her three wins in the 200 freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:57.64. Later, she touched the wall first in the 200 back in 2:12.86. Rutigliano notched victory number three in the 200 IM (2:12.92).
           
Rachel Bellis (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) and Maddy Hayes (Eagan, MN/Eagan) each turned in a pair of second-place finishes. Bellis was second in both the 1000 free (11:19.09) and the 500 free (5:38.89). She was also third in the 200 free (2:03.94). Hayes was runner-up in the 200 butterfly (2:22.92) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.08).
           
Bree Jefferds (Watertown, NY/Watertown) placed second in the 50 free (25.78). She was followed by Kelsey Elliott (Cortland, NY/Homer) in third. Jefferds was also third in the 100 free (56.37).  Morgan Riggins (Austin, TX/Dripping Springs) was third in the 100 breast (1:12.65) and 200 breast (2:36.80). Meghan Barry (White Plains, NY/White Plains) was third in the 500 free (5:46.71).
           
The quartet of Jefferds, Hayes, Elliott, and Bellis teamed up for a second place finish in the 400 free relay. They earned a time of 3:51.95.
           
The Hartwick men also won a total of three races against the Ducks. Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Hanahan), Joe Mulvehill (Penfield, NY/Penfield), and Aron Zhang (Douglaston, NY/Brooklyn Technical) each recorded victories. Detar won the 200 fly event in 1:56.10. He would also end up third in the 1000 free (10:14.24) and the 500 free (5:57.64). Mulvehill touched first in the 50 free (21.91). He took second in the 100 free (48.29). Zhang was the winner of the 200 IM in 1:58.73. He also took second in the 200 free (1:47.17) and third in the 100 fly (54.00).
           
Matt Plunkett (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City) was second in both backstroke events. His time in the 100 was 53.26, and he registered a 1:54.92 in the 200.
           
Brendan Day (Westfield, MA/Westfield) took third place in the 100 breast (1:03.11). Brendan Quinn (Raleigh, NC/Heritage) was third in the 200 fly (2:02.47). Joey Moffitt (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) finished third in the 200 breast (2:19.26).
           
Plunkett, Nick Gess (Mequon, WI/Homestead), David Mauro (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls), and Mulvehill combined for second place in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:17.29.
           
Both Hartwick teams now prepare for the UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Championships which will take place from February 17-20 at Ithaca College.
