CLINTON, NY – Host Hamilton drew first blood in the second half but the Hartwick Hawks answered right back for the game's only two goals on Sunday in a 1-1 tie between the two squads.
The Hawks are now 6-4-3 on the season. Hamilton is now 3-7-3.
After a scoreless first half, Hamilton broke the ice on a goal from Katja Dunlap. She unleashed a 25-yard drive over the head of goalkeeper
Megan McGillycuddy (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and inside the right post for a 1-0 Continental lead.
The advantage was short-lived as the Hawks came right back just 1:18 later to tie the score. A service from
Kiley Richardson (Flanders, NJ/Roxbury) found the head of
Madison Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) at the top of the Hamilton box. Miller headed the ball past a charging Rachel Cooley and into the empty net. It marked Miller's fourth goal of the season and Richardson's first assist of the campaign.
Neither team could find the go-ahead goal in regulation forcing the game into overtime. The Continentals fired six shots with only one requiring a save from McGillycuddy in the opening extra 10-minute period.
In the second, the Hawks out-shot the Continentals by a 3-2 margin.
Ashley Connolly (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) had a shot blocked and
Maddy Paul (Seattle, WA/Nathan Hale) put one over the top of the Hamilton goal.
Megan Maruscsak (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) had the last chance after interceptiong a goal kick, but she wasn't able to put her shot up over Cooley and she made the save.
McGillycuddy was credited with 11 saves in the contest, which was a season-high. Emily Dumont and Cooley combined for four stops for Hamilton.
Hartwick is now 2-1-3 in its last six contests. The game marked the first meeting between the two programs since 2010 and the 23
rd overall. The Continentals hold a slim advantage over the Hawks with a 10-9-3 record.
The Hawks return to Empire 8 Conference play on Wednesday night under the lights of Elmore. 'Wick hosts Utica College beginning at 7 p.m.
