ONEONTA, NY – On Wednesday afternoon, in its final non-league game this season, the Hartwick field hockey team put the visiting Wells College Express away, 3-0, at Wright Stadium. Senior classmates,
Maxine Dunn (Peterborough, NH/Conval) and
Sarah Ryan (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) (2) accounted for 'Wick's scoring offense elevating the team's record to 13-3 and dropping Wells to 4-14.
The victory marks the fourth time this season where the Hawks have posted three goals or more in a match and is their third shutout of the year.
Dunn commenced scoring on the afternoon 16 minutes in as she netted just her second goal of the season. The forward locked in on a ball within a swarming Wells defense and was able to send it home, placing the game in the Hawks' favor, 1-0.
Ryan, the Hawks' leading scorer, notched her seventh and eighth goal to complete the scoring at Wright.
The forward/midfielder first found the back of the cage in the 28
th minute. Positioned all alone on the right side, she gained control of the ball blitzing her shot to the middle of the goal for a 2-0 lead.
Ryan put the game away in the 42
nd minute off of a service played by senior
Mikaelan Stuligross (Walton, NY/Walton). The corner fell into the possession of Ryan who beat the Express keeper, Kelsey Kokosa, for the Hawks' third goal.
Hartwick outshot Wells 20-3 in the contest and drew 18 corners to the Express' three. Senior
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) generated the most of any Hawk with six attempts while both Dunn and Ryan registered four shots apiece.
Hartwick featured two keepers this afternoon with senior
Jilian Sabatino (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) playing the first half and starting things off in the second and junior
Laura Downey (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) logging the final 15:39. Between them, they stopped three balls while Kokosa, recording all 70 minutes for the road team, gathered 12.
The Hawks have one more game on the season's horizon this Saturday, October 29
th when they get back to Empire 8 action against St. John Fisher. Hartwick will also honor its eleven seniors before the 2 p.m. start time.
