ELMIRA, NY – The Hartwick field hockey team overcame an early deficit to Elmira, Saturday afternoon at MAC Stadium, as two different Hawks scored in a 2-1 win over the Soaring Eagles. This is now Hartwick's third consecutive win and second straight victory in conference (9-3, 3-2 E8). Elmira drops to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in the Empire 8.
Elmira struck first eight minutes in. Atu Machika tapped the ball in after a dish from Sarah McCaffrey who received the pass off of a Julia Derco corner to open scoring on the afternoon, 1-0.
Senior
Halle Mahoney (Peabody, MA/Bishop Fenwick) provided the equalizer in the second stanza. In the 54
th minute, the reserve came in contact with the ball after an earlier Hawks' attempt. She scored on a rebound in front of the cage to deadlock the score, one up, and earn her first goal of the season.
The game would only stand tied for about four minutes. At 58:14, a sequence following a Mahoney corner saw Elmira up their defensive pressure causing
Bella Wheeler (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) to leave her shot wide. Despite the initial misfire, the Hawks quickly regrouped finding
Lex Richards (Northport, NY/Northport) at the top of the arc. Through the pressure, the junior found the back of the net to make the score, 2-1, and secure her fifth goal of the year.

Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart) logged all 70 minutes of play rejecting three shots. In net for Elmira, Julie Hockenberger stopped five.
