Men’s Soccer Tops Howard on Senior Day, 3-0

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick got all of its scoring in the second half as the Hawks downed Howard University in the regular season finale on Saturday on Elmore by a final count of 3-0. The victory snaps the Hawks' six-game winless streak and they close the regular season 8-5-4 overall and 2-2-1 in the Sun Belt. 'Wick will await the playoff seeding which will be determined later this evening following the Georgia State-Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State-Georgia Southern matches.

The Hawks out-shot the Bison by a 12-4 margin in the first half but they went unrewarded throughout the period. Hamish Ritchie (Aberdeen Scotland/Aboyne Academy) had a pair of shots, one in the 7th minute and another in the 36th, hit the woodwork, yet the hosts entered halftime even at nil-nil.

Finally in the 57th minute, the Hawks jumped in front. Kyle Honor (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) provided the spoils as he scored off an assist from senior Mike Rood (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley). It marked Honors' third goal of the season. All three have been game-winners. Rood's assist gives him a team-best 10 points.

Just over 16 minutes later, the Hawks would add to their total. Senior Kit Tregear (Hassocks, England/BHASVIC) won a header to get the ball to Jonny Carr (Sunderland, England/Monkwearmouth School) who beat Howard goalkeeper Kenneth Hersey low to the far post for his first collegiate goal.

Just over seven minutes from full time, Ritchie would set up Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) to close out the 3-0 victory. It was Berry's third goal and Ritchie's third assist this season.

Like the first half, Hartwick held a huge advantage in shots in the second, 11-1, to finish the match up 23-5. Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) secured his fourth clean sheet of 2016 after making just one save. Hersey made eight stops for the Bison.

In a pre-match ceremony, the Hawks acknowledged seniors Rood, Tregear, Justin Broome (Markham, ONT/Bill Crothers Secondary School), Jack Donaldson (Paisley, Scotland/Mars Hill University), and Maurizio Fornerino (Maracaibo, Venezuela/International School Brunei) for their contributions to the men's soccer program.
