ONEONTA, NY – Juniors
Lauren Rosenberg (Smithtown, NY/Commack) and
Courtney Coons (Wilton, NY/South Glens Falls) each registered nine points as the Hartwick women's lacrosse team defeated Morrisville State by a final score of 17-13 on Wednesday at Wright Stadium. The Hawks used a 5-0 run in an 8:47 span of the second half to pull away for the win.
Rosenberg pumped in a career-high seven goals to go along with a pair of assists for 'Wick. Coons tied a career-best with four goals and she added a career-high five assists.
Jessie Matt (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) and
Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) each contributed two tallies and one helper.
Megan Young (Gansevoort, NY/Schuylerville) added a goal and three assists.
Abby Letourneau (South Portland, ME/South Portland) also scored for the Hawks.
'Wick would finish the contest with advantages in shots (31-21), ground balls (25-20), and draw controls (17-14).
The Mustangs jumped out to a quick two-goal lead as Angela Marriott tallied twice inside the first minute. The Hawks jumped in front with three goals in a 4:26 span. They would add three more in a 3:35 time frame for a 6-2 advantage with 12 minutes remaining in the opening half. Rosenberg had three scores with Matt netting two in the first 18 minutes.
The two teams traded goals for the rest of the half with Coons and Letourneau getting the Hartwick tallies and the Hawks held an 8-4 lead at halftime.
A total of eighteen goals were scored in the second half, nine by each team. Knapp scored once with Coons finding the net twice in the first 7:23 and the score was 11-7. Knapp then started a five-goal rally at 18:11 with her second score. Rosenberg would tally three times with Coons adding one and 'Wick was comfortably in front, 16-7, with 9:23 remaining.
The Mustangs made it interesting with six of the game's final seven goals but they ran out of clock in the Hartwick victory.
Hartwick goalkeeper
Carleigh Tarala (Tully, NY/Tully) and
Sydney Robert (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson) tied for a game-high with six ground balls apiece. Tarala also caused a game-high three turnovers and made five saves.
Young would add five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Coons forced a pair of Mustang miscues and Letourneau grabbed a game-high eight draws.
Marriott and Jenna Harris would lead Morrisville with four goals apiece.
The Hawks are off for one week until they travel to SUNY New Paltz for a 4:30 p.m. game.
