ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick out-scored visiting Elmira 5-0 in the second quarter in a 7-5 victory over the Soaring Eagles Saturday at Wright Stadium. The victory for Hartwick is its first in league play this season. The Hawks improve to 3-6 and 1-2 in the E8. Elmira drops to 4-4 and 1-2.
Chris Vaden (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) scored three times to pace the 'Wick offense.
Conner Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) scored a pair of goals.
The Hawks held a huge 41-19 advantage in shots in the match, including a 30-8 advantage in the second and third quarters.
Elmira grabbed the lead near the midway point of the first quarter and the Soaring Eagles held it through the end of the period. Hartwick was in front a minute into the second quarter. Long scored from
Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) 17 seconds into the period, and Vaden tallied on the man-up with
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) assisting 43 seconds later. The Hawks would be in front for the remainder of the game.
Cody Petillo (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North), Vaden, and Long each added goals 1:28 apart later in the second quarter as the Hawks broke the game open.
Armstrong added to the total 2:36 into the second half to make it a 6-1 game. Elmira got one back, but Vaden netted his nineteenth goal of the season to make it 7-2 Hawks.
Elmira would make it interesting with two goals with under five minutes left in period to trim the gap to 7-4. The Soaring Eagles inched closer early in the fourth quarter, but it would be as close as they'd get as the Hawks allowed them just four more shots. Goalkeeper
Mike Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) would make stops on two of the four. He finished the day with six saves.
Long would close the day with two goals and an assist. Petillo and Armstrong chipped in a goal and one helper apiece.
James Vogt (Stratham, NH/Exeter) led all players with seven ground balls. He also won 8-of-11 face-offs.
Mike Rourke and
Tanner Patterson (East Longmeadow, MA/East Long Meadow) each contributed five ground balls.
David Bianculli (Charlton, MA/Shepard Hill Regional) had four ground balls and he won 4-of-6 face-offs.
Chris VanDemark (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) also recorded four ground balls.
Four different players found the net for Elmira on the day. Skyler Pradelski paced the Soaring Eagles with two scores.
Hartwick remains at home on Wednesday, April 13 against Stevens in another Empire 8 Conference contest.
