ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick had difficulty putting the ball away but got the result it wanted on Saturday in the opening game of the 13
th annual Erinn K. Brozman Memorial Cup at Elmore Field.
Sierra Bentley (Worcester, NY/Schenevus) and
Allie Ricci (Millstone, NJ/Saint John Vianney) scored goals for the Hawks in a 2-1 victory over the Keuka Wolves.
Hartwick dominated the proceedings, out-shooting the Wolves by a margin of 34-3 for the match. The Hawks took all 11 corners in the contest.
After 23 scoreless minutes, Bentley put the Hawks in front as she took a pass from
Casey Boucher (Northbridge, MA/Northbridge) at the top corner of the box to Keuka goalkeeper Talia Cruz's left. Bentley collected the ball and neatly tucked a shot inside the far post and in for a 1-0 advantage for the hosts.
'Wick would hold a 17-2 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes but were unable to get a second tally before the break.
In the second half, the Wolves tied the score after 13:46. 'Wick keeper
Celeste Trevellini (Bayside, NY/World Journalism) came off her line to clear a ball out of her box. Her clearance, however, went directly to Allison Ariola 35 yards out. Ariola sent a shot at goal which Trevellini recovered to save but Brooke Guernsey was there on the doorstep to finish off the rebound for a tie game, 1-1.
The deadlock was short-lived as the Hawks picked up the eventual game-winner 7:31 later. On the right side of Keuka's goal,
Ashley Connolly's (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) service took a few deflections inside the 6-yard box. The ball popped out to Ricci who finished on a low shot that beat Cruz to her right side for the lead.
The Hawks held the Wolves without a shot for the final 23 minutes and change to secure the victory and a 2-0 start to the season.
Rachel Weir (New Milford, CT/New Milford) registered a game-high five shots for 'Wick. Boucher, Ricci, and Bentley added four apiece.
Megan McGillycuddy (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) played the first half in goal for 'Wick with Trevellini playing the final 45 minutes. Cruz finished the day with nine saves for Keuka.
The Hawks will look for their third consecutive Brozman Cup title on Monday when they host SUNY Purchase at 12 p.m.
