Foreman, Corbett Power Hawks Past Utica, 62-52

UTICA, NY – Senior Jacqui Foreman (Tolland, CT/Tolland) and sophomore Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) combined for 39 points to lead Hartwick's women's basketball team to a 62-52 road win at Utica (2-9, 0-2 E8) on Thursday night at Harold T. Clark Athletic Center. With the victory, the Hawks even their season record at 5-5 and stay perfect in the Empire 8 at 2-0.
           
Foreman led all players in both scoring and rebounding with 20 points and 13 rebounds. It marked her fifth double-double of the season. Corbett had career-highs of 19 points and five three-point baskets in the game.
           
The Hawks used a late run in the first half to break open a tight game. A bucket from Courtney Cirillo (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) with 4:35 left put the Hawks ahead to stay at 21-19. Two Corbett three-pointers and a Foreman layup gave the Hawks a 10-2 spurt heading into the locker room up 29-21.
           
Foreman would miss a double-double by a single rebound with 12 points and nine boards in the first half with Corbett adding 11 points for 'Wick.
           
The Hawks opened the third quarter scoring five of the first seven points for a 34-23 edge. The advantage would grow to 13 points later on a Cirillo free throw, 43-30, before the Hawks took a 10-point lead into the final period.
           
After an early Utica free throw in the fourth, the Hawks rattled off 10 of the next 13 points over a two and a half minute span to open up their biggest lead of the night, 53-37, with 7:06 remaining in the game.
           
Utica wouldn't go down without a fight, rallying for eight consecutive points to trim the gap to eight, 53-45, with under four minutes to go, but a steal and layup from Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) with 2:16 left would end the run and Hartwick would lead by 10 or more the rest of the way in the win.
           
The Hawks shot just under 40% for the night making 22 of their 56 shots (39.3%). They held Utica to 29% (19-of-65) shooting and out-rebounded the Pioneers by a margin of 49-40.
           
Foreman made 7-of-12 from the floor and grabbed five offensive boards to go along with three assists and a pair of steals. Corbett also hit 7-of-12 from the field and made five of her eight three-point attempts. She also had seven rebounds.
           
Johnson finished with seven points, four rebounds, and three assists. Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby) contributed seven points and three dishes. Cirillo added five points, eight boards, two assists, two blocks, and a steal.
           
Utica was paced by Ashley Mayo's 15 points. Nicolette Conkin chipped in with 12 points.
           
Hartwick runs its winning streak to four games against the Pioneers. They also improve to 34-21 against them all-time.
           
Hartwick hosts Ithaca College (8-1, 1-0 E8) on Saturday in a battle of league unbeatens. Tip-off is 2 p.m. from Lambros Arena.
