CAMBRIDGE, MA –
Jake Sachse (Lutherville, MD/Boys' Latin School of MD) scored with two seconds left on the clock to help Hartwick's men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over host MIT on Sunday in Cambridge. Two goals less than a minute apart at 4:34 and 3:43 tied the game for the Engineers before the Sachse clincher.
Hartwick improves to 2-0 on the season with the victory. MIT drops to 1-1.
Sam Ferguson (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) led Hartwick with four goals on the day.
Wyatt Long (Hardwick, NJ/Blair Academy) contributed a pair of goals and added an assist.
David Demand (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango),
Cordell Armstrong (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area), and Sachse each added a goal and two helpers.
Neither team led by more than a goal until the third quarter when the Engineers jumped in front 6-4. Ferguson, however, started a 4-0 Hartwick rally to put the Hawks ahead by an 8-6 margin. Demand,
Chris Gamber (Southington, CT/Southington), and
Chris VanDemark (Paintged Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post) also scored in the run.
MIT answered with a pair of goals but Ferguson and Long tallied 14 seconds apart to build the advantage back up. The Engineers got the next two scores before the Sachse clincher.
Connor O'Brien (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) made 13 saves in goal for the Hawks. He made seven stops in the second quarter alone.
Eric Schweitzer (Babylon, NY/Babylon) had a game-high 14 ground balls for 'Wick.
Garrison Wojtas (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) and
James Vogt (Stratham, NH/Exeter) each had four.
Hartwick returns to action next Saturday at home against Farmingdale State.
