ONEONTA, NY –
Lavaisha Sparrow (Dover Plains, NY/Dover) registered her first collegiate goals for Hartwick field hockey and
Claudia Stone (Akron, NY/Akron) had a hand in three others in a 5-0 shutout of Morrisville Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The Hawks remain unbeaten versus the Mustangs all-time at 11-0, and improve their season record to 6-2. Morrisville drops to 2-5 on the year.
Entering the game in the 21
st minute, Sparrow's impact was felt almost immediately as she completed a play created by
Gina Cozetti (Commack, NY/Commack) at 23:51
for the Hawks' 3-0 advantage. Her second tally, the goal that settled scoring at Wright, came in a sequence controlled by the sophomore from start to finish. Working on the far left of the field, Sparrow battled to keep the ball in her possession as she inched closer and closer to striking distance. With just enough of a touch, she casted the shot which rounded out the 5-0 final.
Stone's presence made way for the game's opening scoring play with
Allyson Quirk (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) as the recipient. Stone skipped the ball to Quirk who was standing just inches away from the Mustang's keeper and rolled the ball through a cluster at 14:06.
Stone's first goal of the contest in the 18
th minute, the second for the Hawks, saw the senior outworking her opponents. Running down the field, Stone's craft proved too much for each opponent who stepped up and when in shooting range, fired her shot into the cage.
Out of the intermission, Stone netted another, this one with
Maria Stalder's (New Woodstock, NY/Cazenovia) help. Stalder gained possession of a hard through ball in traffic as she pushed it with just enough effort to get it to Stone who was battling in front of the cage at the 39:47 mark.
The Hawks featured two keepers in cage,
Allyson Osborne (Nottingham, PA/Solanco) and
Shannon MacMaster (Hamilton, Ont/Sherwood Secondary School). Osborne, playing the first 35 minutes, was awarded the victory.
The Hawks host another non-conference match this Wednesday, September 27 when Vassar takes to Wright at 4 p.m.
