ONEONTA, NY – A goal from Colleen Geyer 11:23 into the first overtime period would lift visiting SUNY Oneonta to a 2-1 victory over Hartwick's field hockey team on Wednesday at Wright Stadium. The loss drops the Hawks from the unbeaten ranks as they move to 2-1 on the year. The Red Dragons up their season mark to 2-1 with the win.
Geyer's tally occurred following Oneonta's third penalty corner of the extra session. Allyson Bilow delivered her corner to the right of Hartwick's goal to Carissa Warren at the top of the circle. Warren got the ball to Geyer and she popped a high shot past 'Wick keeper
Allyson Osborne (Nottingham, PA/Solanco) and into the far corner for the clincher.
The two squads played a very even contest with just two shots and two corners separating them. The Red Dragons edged the Hawks in shots, 19-17, with Hartwick holding the adsvantage in corners, 14-12.
In the early going Hartwick had the upper hand as it registered three shots and a corner in the opening nine minutes. The rest of the first half, however, saw the Red Dragons control play. They broke through at the 24:19 mark. Bilow, on another Oneonta corner, fed Nicole Johnston, who made a move around a defender, and fired on the Hartwick cage. Osbourne got a piece of the shot but she couldn't keep it out and the Red Dragons led by one.
Oneonta continued to keep the ball in Hartwick's end for much of the half, but the Hawks would earn a late corner as time expired.
Maggie Stauble (Kingston, NY/Kingston) had a shot blocked, which generated a second corner with no time left.
Claudia Stone's (Akron, NY/Akron) second corner made its way to
Tegan Robinson (Mechanicville, NY/Shenendehowa) who sent the ball back in front of the Red Dragons' goal. Stone was there to send the ball home after it traversed through traffic.
The goal ignited the Hawks as they controlled the tempo in the second half. They would out-shoot the Red Dragons 10-6 and out-corner them 10-3 in the half but couldn't find the go-ahead goal despite a few dangerous chances in front of the SUCO cage.
Oneonta returned the favor in overtime as much of the period had the ball pinned in Hartwick's end. The visitors would hold a 5-1 edge in shots before Geyer put the game away.
Bella Wheeler (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) and
Brooke Singer (Johnson City, NY/Maine-Endwell) combined for eight of the Hawks' 17 shots in the contest. Osbourne closed the game with five stops for Hartwick. Danell Jones made six saves for Oneonta.
The Hawks remain at home on Saturday as they open up Empire 8 Conference play. They host Elmora College at Wright beginning at 1 p.m.
