Women’s Basketball Drops 66-58 Decision to Stevens

ONEONTA, NY – Visiting Stevens outlasted Hartwick 66-58 in Empire 8 women's basketball on Saturday evening at Lambros Arena. The Ducks out-scored the Hawks 24-16 in the third quarter after a 27-27 tie at halftime and maintained their advantage in the fourth quarter for the victory.

The Hawks are now 3-10 overall and 2-2 in Empire 8 play. The Ducks even up their overall record to 7-7 and they improve to 4-2 in the conference.

Hartwick received a career-high 23 points from freshman Kelly Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls), which included 17 points in the second half alone. She shot 9-of-10 from the field and tied for a team-best with seven rebounds.

Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) and Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) each contributed 12 points for the Hawks. Mary Schoenherr (Unionville, CT/Farmington) added seven points and a team-high four assists. Alexa DuBois (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) grabbed seven rebounds.

The Ducks were led by Christina Li's 21 points. She connected on five three-pointers in the game. Megan Brown added 16 points and game-highs of nine rebounds and five assists. Alison Criswell was also in double digits with 13 points.

Johnson and Brown each scored nine points to lead their respective teams through a first half that saw neither squad lead by more than six points. The Ducks held a one-point, 17-16 edge after the first quarter with the teams knotted at 27 at the break.

Baskets by Johnson, Corbett, and Pine would hand the Hawks a 34-27 lead to start the third quarter. An 11-1 run for Ducks would erase the margin and put them up 38-35. They increased their lead but two Schoenherr free throws trimmed the deficit to four, 46-42, with 2:21 left in the quarter. A 5-1 spurt closed the quarter with Stevens holding a 51-43 advantage.

In the final quarter, the Stevens lead grew to 10 but Hartwick twice cut it to six. With the score 61-51 with under five minutes left, a three from Corbett and a layup from Pine made it a five-point game, 61-56, at the 3:22 mark. A Sydney Darby jumper and a Li three-pointer on consecutive trips, however, would seal it for Stevens.

The Hawks made 44% of their shots and they nailed nine three-pointers in the game. They also out-rebounded the Ducks 31-29. Stevens would make 40% from the floor.

Hartwick returns to action next weekend as it hosts St. John Fisher on Friday and Nazareth on Saturday.
