ALFRED, NY – Junior guards
Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) and
Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) combined to score 40 points to lead Hartwick women's basketball to a 76-60 victory over Alfred University in the Hawks' Empire 8 Conference opener on Friday night at Terry S. Galanis Family Arena. The Hawks snap a four-game winless streak and improve to 2-8 on the season. The Saxons fall to 2-8 and 0-2.
The Hawks' 76 points and nine three-pointers in the game were season-highs. Johnson and Corbett tied for a game-high with 20 points apiece. They combined for 16-of-26 shooting from the floor, 14 rebounds, eight assists, five steals, and four three-pointers.
Johnson made seven her of her 10 shots, including two three-pointers, to go along with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Corbett connected on 9-of-16 shots with two threes, eight boards, five assists, and two steals.
Alexa DuBois (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) added a double-double of 13 points and a team-best 10 rebounds.
Victoria Sacramone (Bayside, NY/St. Mary's) contributed 11 points, a trio of three-pointers, and four assists.
The Hawks took the lead on a Corbett three-pointer 27 seconds into the contest and they never relinquished it. 'Wick led 18-8 after the first quarter and a Sacramone triple 2:18 into the second quarter would build the advantage to 12 points, 25-13. The Hawks would maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the game.
A jumper from Corbett with 3:18 remaining in the third quarter would hand the Hawks their biggest margin of the night, 58-35. A 13-point deficit near the midway point of the final period would be as close as the Saxons would get.
'Wick shot a season-high 46.8% (29-of-62) from the floor on the night. The Hawks held the Saxons to only 31.5% (23-for-73). They also out-rebounded the hosts, 48-39.
Reining Empire 8 Rookie of the Week
Kelly Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) would chip in with seven points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals for Hartwick.
Mary Schoenherr (Unionville, CT/Farmington) tied for a game-high with five assists.
Alfred received 17 points from Jamie Wilcox. Chloe Kottwitz was also in double figures with 14 points.
Hartwick looks to make it a 2-0 start to league play tomorrow as they travel to Houghton for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
