ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick scored the game's first bucket 1:21 into the contest and then led for the remainder of the game on Friday night in a 66-42 romp over visiting Houghton. The Highlanders entered the game tied for third in the Empire 8 standings.
The Hawks, who improve to 7-17 overall and 6-9 in the Empire 8, would lead by as many as 19 points in the opening half and 24 would be their largest margin of the night.
The Hawks would shoot 42% from the floor and they out-rebounded the visitors, 50-43. They also held Houghton to just 24% shooting.
Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) missed a double-double by one rebound with game-highs of 23 points and nine boards. She made 8-of-17 from the field and also made a trio of three-point baskets.
Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) made 8-of-17 from the floor and hit a pair of threes for 19 points. She added five rebounds and four assists.
Kelly Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) was also in double figures with 10 points. She contributed eight rebounds and two blocks.
'Wick would jump out to a 9-0 advantage and never looked back. The Highlanders managed to trim the deficit to five twice but the Hawks finished the first quarter on a 9-4 run for a 20-10 lead after 10 minutes.
The Hawks got the opening basket of the second quarter from Corbett and they would lead by at least 12 until halftime. Fourteen would be as close as Houghton would get before seven of the final nine points for Hartwick gave it a 36-17 edge at halftime. Corbett would torch the nets for 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting in the half.
The lead would grow to 23 points, 42-19, three and a half minutes into the third quarter. An 11-2 Houghton run would cut the gap to 14 before a Johnson three closed the period with Hartwick up 47-30.
Hartwick scored the first five points of the final quarter to build its lead back over 20 points. The Hawks would maintain their big lead as 17 points was as close as the Highlanders would get.
Kelsey Collins (Forestburgh, NY/Eldred Central) contributed five points, four rebounds, and a game-high three blocks in the game.
Mary Schoenherr (Unionville, CT/Farmington) added a game-high eight assists, five rebounds, and three points.
Rhiannon Groll (Red Bank, NJ/Boonton) netted four points and
Alexa DuBois (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) contributed five boards, three steals, two blocks, and two points.
Houghton (12-12, 8-7 E8) was led by Brittany Lenart's 13 points. She was the lone Highlander in double figures.
Hartwick looks to finish off its season with three wins in its final four games tomorrow against Alfred. Tip-off is 4 p.m. from Lambros Arena.
