Hawks Defeated in Season Opener at New Paltz, 15-9

NEW PALTZ, NY – Visiting Hartwick entered halftime with New Paltz tied at 6-all before the hosts out-scored 'Wick 9-3 in the second half for a 15-9 win. 'Wick is now 0-1 on the young season while New Paltz improves to 2-0.

Senior Ashley Werner (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) led Hartwick with three goals on the day. Hanna Layton (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks), playing in her first collegiate game, added two goals and an assist. Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman), Michaela McKernan (Branchville, NJ/High Point Regional), Jennifer Darasz (Gorham, ME/Gorham), and Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) all scored a goal apiece.

New Paltz was paced by Tara Bovich and Amy Hofer. The duo combined for 12 goals with each player registering six tallies.

The game opened with neither team opening up a lead larger than a single goal over nearly 20 minutes. Knapp and Werner got the first two Hartwick goals before two straight New Paltz tallies gave them a 3-2 lead. McKernan answered to tie the score at three before two more New Paltz goals pushed the margin to 5-3 with just under 13 minutes left in the half.

An unassisted Werner goal followed by a Darasz free-position score evened the game, 5-5, with 3:19 left on the clock. The hosts went ahead again 1:09 later before Pooler found the net on a free-position effort at 1:26 for a 6-all tie at halftime.

Bovich gave NP the edge 17 ticks into the second half. The game remained 7-6 for the next 12 and a half minutes until Werner evened things at seven. New Paltz came right back 25 seconds later at the 16:48 mark to take the lead for good. It would mark the first of a six-goal run over an 8:08 span as NP opened up a 13-7 lead. Layton netted 'Wick's last two goals in a 1:53 span later in the half.

New Paltz had advantages in shots (35-18), ground balls (28-16), and draws (17-9). Jennifer Paszko (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) made 14 saves in her first game in cage at 'Wick. New Paltz's Nicole Sheintul made four saves.

Senior Mattie Coffey (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) led Hartwick in both ground balls (5) and caused turnovers (4). Emma Kaplan (Danbury, CT/Danbury) added three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Ashley Egerter (Rocky Point, NY/Rocky Point) also recorded three caused turnovers.

Hartwick will host SUNY Oneonta at Wright Stadium on Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m. It marks the first in a four-game home stand in a 10-day span for the Hawks.
