ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick men's swimming and diving team kept it rolling on Saturday afternoon, beating Springfield College and Union College in both ends of their tri-meet at Moyer Pool. They beat the Pride by a score of 187-111 and the Dutchmen by a score of 189-98. 'Wick won nine of 14 swimming events on the day, and are now 11-1 for the year, their best start through 12 decisions since 2012-13 when they were 12-0 en route to a 14-1 season.
The Hawks had three multiple individual winners on the day. Ryan McLoughlin (New Windsor, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) won the 100 free by a nail-biting one-tenth of a second in 50.21, beating teammate Max Ferrick (Westford, MA/Westford Academy), who finished in 50.22. McLoughlin also won the 500 free, touching up in 4:58.02, and finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.23.
Yury Chernyak (Sidney, NY/Sidney) won both the 100 breast in 1:00.19 and the 200 breast in 2:13.02, and was followed up in each event by teammates Hunter McRee (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) in second and Bill Tague (Alpine, NY/Odessa Montour) in third. Chernyak also finished third in the 200 IM, completing the race in 2:03.14.
The final multiple winner of the day for Hartwick was Aron Zhang (Douglaston, NY/Brooklyn Technical). Zhang won the 100 back in 54.22 and took gold in the 200 IM in 1:59.67. He also came in second, less than a quarter-second off the lead, in the 100 fly, with a time of 54.08.
The only other individual win for the Hawks came from Pacal Fernandez (San Pedro, CA/San Pedro), who won the 200 free, touching up in 1:49.50. He also finished third in the 200 fly with a time of 2:07.03.
Hartwick won both of the day's relays. They led off the meet with a win in the 200 medley from Zhang, Chernyak, Oleg Gentry (Stamford, CT/Trinity-Pawling), and Zach Skelton (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) in 1:38.67. A team of Ferrick, Skelton, Fernandez, and McLoughlin closed the meet by winning the 400 free in 3:21.14.
The Hawks continue their season in one week on Saturday, January 19, when they travel to Alfred University for a 1 p.m. meet.
