ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick men's swimming and diving team started off the new year with a victory over SUNY Cortland on Saturday afternoon, winning nine of 16 events en route to a 163-125 win. The Hawks are now 9-1 for the season.
Max Ferrick (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) and Yury Chernyak (Sidney, NY/Sidney) each had multiple individual wins on the day. Ferrick won the 200 fly by almost three seconds, clocking in at 2:03.83. He won the 100 free by over a full second, at 49.63. Chernyak took both breaststroke events; he finished with a time of 1:00.57 in the 100 and 2:15.60 in the 200.
The other three individual winners for 'Wick were Pacal Fernandez (San Pedro, CA/San Pedro), Ryan McLoughlin (New Windsor, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes), and Aron Zhang (Douglaston, NY/Brooklyn Technical). Fernandez won the 200 free in 1:51.08, McLoughlin the 500 free in 4:59.18, and Zhang the 200 IM in a runaway 1:58.69. All three swimmers also had at least one second place finish as well. Fernandez took silver in the 100 fly at 56.71. Zhang finished second twice, in the 100 back (54.33) and 50 free (22.76), as did McLoughlin, in the 200 free (1:53.06) and 100 free (50.83).
'Wick won both of the day's relays. A team of Zhang, Chernyak, Oleg Gentry (Stamford, CT/Trinity-Pawling), and Ferrick opened up the day with a victory in the 200 medley, touching up in 1:39.14. Ferrick, Bill Tague (Alpine, NY/Odessa Montour), Fernandez, and McLoughlin closed out the meet by winning the 400 free in 3:22.54.
The Hawks are back at it in one week, when they host Springfield and Union for a tri-meet on Saturday, January 12. The diving starts at 9 a.m., and the swimming begins at 1 p.m.
