Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

SUNY Delhi Sinks Hawks, 3-1

DELHI, NY – SUNY Delhi took a 2-0 first-half lead inside 22 minutes and recorded the only goal of the second half to hand Hartwick's men's soccer team a 3-1 loss on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in Delhi, NY.

Delhi improves to 8-6 on the season while Hartwick drops to 2-10.

The Broncos took the lead in the 11th minute as Juan Velez scored the first of two goals on the day. Brody Rettle, who had hit the crossbar three minutes earlier, picked up the assist.

Just under 11 minutes later, Delhi registered an insurance goal as Velez converted on a breakaway opportunity and the Broncos were up 2-0.

With 11 minutes left in the first half, the Hawks got a fortunate bounce as a Bronco defender deflected a Hartwick cross into his own net and Hartwick had cut the lead in half. The first 45 minutes ended with Delhi out-shooting 'Wick, 8-7.

The Hawks had three shots on target in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Jimmy Noel (Cap Haitian, Haiti/Baldwin) had two shots with Joey Bertone (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) adding one with all three forcing saves from Delhi's Noah Blake.

Instead of the Hawks getting the tying goal, the Broncos got their third on a 'Wick own goal in the 62nd minute which gave the hosts a 3-1 advantage.

Troy Amegashie (Accra, Ghana/Tema International School) would hit the post just over three minutes after Delhi's third goal yet the game remained a 3-1 contest.

Hartwick had eight more shots the rest of the way, out-shooting Delhi by an 8-4 margin, but the match ended with the same 3-1 score line.

Hartwick held an 18-15 edge in shots. Amergashie (5) and Noel (4) accounted for half of the Hawks' shots in the contest. Jake Zona (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Joey Bertone (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) each had three apiece.

Aidan Wholihan (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's Annapolis) started in goal for the Hawks. He played the first half and made three saves. Britt Reisman (Vero Beach, FL/Saint Edward's School) was in net for the second half and he also stopped three shots. Blake made nine saves total for the Broncos.

Hartwick plays Saturday night under the lights of Elmore against Elmira College beginning at 7 p.m.
