Field Hockey Cruises Past Express

AURORA, NY – The Hartwick field hockey team snapped their three-game losing streak on Wednesday, taking out Wells on the road, 9-0. The win boosts the Hawks' record to 7-4, while the Express continue their winless start to the season at 0-10.

Leah Tolley (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) opened the scoring with her first career goal in the fourth minute, and was followed up 25 seconds later by a Sydney Gagnon (Chestertown, NY/North Warren Central) tally to double the Hartwick lead. The Hawks would again double their lead by the end of the first quarter, as Gagnon tallied again in the 14th minute, assisted by Allyson Quirk (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow), and Gina Cozetti (Commack, NY/Commack) scored with one second remaining.

'Wick matched their first quarter with four more goals in the second. Kate LaPorta (Schenectady, NY/Niskayuna) recorded her first goal of the season at 21:05, with Jackie Hughes (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) earning the first point of her collegiate career on the assist. Cozetti tallied again in the 24th minute to make it 6-0, and LaPorta earned her first career assist about a minute-and-a-half later on an Emily Schaub (Brewster, NY/Brewster) goal. The final score of the quarter was a reversal of the first, as Hughes got the first of her career, assisted by LaPorta at 26:38.

The game slowed down starting in the third quarter. Alexa Matarazzo (Commack, NY/Commack) potted what became the game's final goal 2:11 into the second half. The rest of the period saw just three shots, including the first two of the day from Wells. The home side had three more shots in the fourth quarter, all of which went wide.

Cozetti led all players with four shots, three on goal, and two in goal. Tolley was right behind her with three shots, also with three on target, including her goal. LaPorta was directly involved in the most scoring plays, with a goal on one shot and two assists, and Hughes also had a nice day, registering a goal on one attempt and a helper. Allyson Osborne (Nottingham, PA/Solanco) played the first quarter in net, then Madison Maddocks (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas) took over for the final three periods, making a save in the third quarter.

Sadie Sheffler led Wells with two shots; Caitlin Lawrence, Chloe Marcus, and Whitney Coleman all had one each. Sabrina Burns was in cage for all sixty minutes, making four saves on 13 shots.

Hartwick dominated the shot count, leading 18-5, including a 15-1 lead in shots on goal. They led by less in penalty corners taken, but still doubled up Wells, 6-3.

The Hawks play next at home, taking on Elmira in an Empire 8 Conference battle on Saturday, October 12 at 1 p.m. on the Wright Stadium turf. The Soaring Eagles have lost both of their conference games by 1-0 scores, falling to Houghton in overtime and Washington & Jefferson in regulation.
