Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Season Comes to a Close With Loss at Utica

ONEONTA, NY – Visiting Hartwick College out-shot Utica by a 14-10 margin in the game, but the Pioneers would register goals on four of their 10 attempts to claim a 4-1 victory over the Hawks in their season finale on Saturday at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.

Adnan Bakalovic had a big day for the Pioneers as he recorded his team's second, third, and fourth goal, all within a 7:19 span in the second half. Jake Zona (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) netted his fourth goal of the season 96 seconds after the Pioneers' final tally of the day but it was too little too late for the Hawks.

UC opened the scoring in the 13th minute as Thomas Muller broke in alone with Hartwick keeper Britt Reisman (Vero Beach, FL/Saint Edward's School). He put it past him from 15 yards away for the go-ahead score.

The half would end with the hosts holding the 1-0 advantage. Both teams were even in shots, 4-4.

Bakalovic got his scoring spree started with just under four minutes elapsed in the second half. He scored from roughly ten yards out into the top right corner for a 2-0 UC lead.

Less than five minutes later, he was at it again as he scored on another 1v1 opportunity with Reisman. He would score into the bottom right corner and suddenly the Pioneers had a three-goal cushion.

Baklovic topped off his day in the 57th as he scored on a centering pass from 10 yards away.

Zona answered as he found the net off a centering feed from Joey Bertone (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) in the 59th minute. Bertone leads the Hawks in assists this season with four helpers. Hartwick had six shots to Utica's three over the final 31 minutes but couldn't produce another goal.

Zona (6) and Troy Amegashie (Accra, Ghana/Tema International School) (5) accounted for 11 of the Hawks' shots on the afternoon. Bertone, Eddie Carpio (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn), and Ansh Budwar (Pune, India/Akash International School) had the others.

Reisman was credited with three saves in the opening 59 minutes in goal for 'Wick. Aidan Wholihan (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's Anapolis) relieved him for the final 31 minutes. He also made three saves. Nick Spooner made five stops for the Pioneers.

The Hawks close out 2019 with a mark of 3-13 with victories over Farmingdale State, Clarks Summit, and Elmira. Seven of their losses were by just a goal and they took four opponents to overtime, including two future Empire 8 Conference members. Hartwick is a full Empire 8 member in the fall of 2020.
