Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Big Second Half Leads Division I Binghamton to Win Over ’Wick in Exhibition

BINGHAMTON, NY – The host Binghamton Bearcats (6-7) scored 62 points with eight three-pointers in the second half alone as they topped the Hartwick College Hawks 98-45 in an exhibition game for 'Wick at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center Sunday afternoon.

The Hawks would struggle shooting the basketball as they made only 23.3% (17-for-73) as a group in the contest. 'Wick could only manage five three-pointers (5-for-31) as well.

Austin Haskell (Kirkwood, NY/Susquehanna Valley) recorded a team-high 15 points for the Hawks. He made five of his 12 shots from the floor and he pulled down seven rebounds. Liam Drennan (Oyster Bay, NY/Chaminade) dropped in 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go along with six boards. Pat Garey (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) had eight first-half points and Bobby Connors (Rockville Centre, NY/Chaminade) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Binghamton started strong as it scored the first 10 points of the game. Haskell netted four points and Garey hit a three as the Hawks scored the next seven to close it to a three-point game after four and a half minutes.

Haskell tied the game at 14 on a jumper with under 10 minutes left in the half. Sam Hanley (Cranston, RI/Cranston East) drained a trey at the 7:41 mark and Hartwick held the lead, 17-16, at the third media timeout. The Bearcats moved ahead for good on a Brenton Mills' three. He would score 10 consecutive points for his team, which closed the half on a 20-4 run to claim a 36-21 advantage heading into the locker room.

Garey (8) and Haskell (6) combined for 14 points in the first half for the Hawks. Mills had 16 for the Bearcats with four three-pointers.

A three-pointer from Connors followed by a layup from Kyle Bradshaw (Tinton Falls, NJ/Manasquan) would make it a single-digit game, 38-30, early in the second half. Shorter thereafter, back-to-back buckets from Haskell made it a 42-34 game at the 14:01 mark. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they would manage just one point over the next 4:16 as Binghamton jumped out to a 24-point lead (59-35) with under 10 minutes left to go.

Another shooting drought for the Hawks, which lasted three minutes, would help the Bearcats increase their margin to 74-40. A Drennan basket stopped the bleeding temporarily but the Bearcats answered with a 16-0 run. A Drennan three marked the final Hartwick points and Binghamton got the last eight points to close it out.

The Bearcats ended the contest shooting 51.7% (31-for-60) from the floor and 46.7% (14-for-30) from three-point range. They controlled the paint, out-scoring the Hawks 34-18. They also scored 36 fast break points and netted 20 points off of just 13 Hartwick turnovers. The hosts had the edge on the glass, 52-40.

Hartwick (6-3) next plays on Thursday, January 2 at SUNY Delhi in its first game of 2020. The Hawks and Broncos tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
