Hartwick Drops Final Home Game to SUNY Poly

ONEONTA, NY –Despite being down only a goal after Emma Knapp (Canandaigua, NY/Marcus Whitman) tallied the 100th point of her career on a free position goal with 2:19 left, the Hartwick women's lacrosse team could not complete the comeback on Wednesday evening against SUNY Poly, falling 15-13 in their final home game of the season. The Hawks' record is now 7-8, while the Wildcats' win total moves to double-digits at 10-5.

GinaMarie Wilson (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) broke the ice, scoring off of a pass from Amy Tracy (Smithtown, NY/Florida Southern College) 1:34 in. The teams then traded a few two-goal streaks; Kayla Prosinski and Emily Somes (from Prosinski) gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead, but the Hawks took it back with goals by Knapp at 21:06, assisted by Rachel Hedden (Burlington, CT/Central Conn. State), and Wilson at 20:45, assisted by Hailey Pooler (Adams Center, NY/South Jefferson) in her final home game. Prosinski tallied her 90th of the season at 18:29 from Jennifer Maxam to tie it up again at three, and then returned the favor by assisting on Maxam's go-ahead goal at 14:06. Wilson got the hat trick at 13:22 to tie it up at four, but SUNY Poly followed that with three unanswered, taking a 7-4 lead. Emily Somes had the first two of those goals (the second assisted by Prosinski), while Molly Burdick forced a turnover and converted from close-range for the third at 9:50. The Hawks would not go quietly into the half, however, as Wilson had goals at 4:54 and 3:37 to bring 'Wick within one, and Knapp made it seven-all with four ticks on the clock.

The Wildcats regrouped during the break. Maxam assisted on goals from Somes at 27:34 and Prosinski at 22:16 to go ahead, 9-7. Hedden made the deficit one again at 20:51 (with an assist to Pooler), but Prosinski responded just 47 seconds later with another insurance goal. After Pooler pulled her squad to within one at 18:55, the teams traded the next six goals, as Hartwick tied it up three times only to see their opponents retake the lead shortly thereafter. Hedden converted with a woman-up at 15:58, but Samantha Dayter sent a pass from Prosinski into the net at 14:21 to make it 11-10. Emily Schaub (Brewster, NY/Brewster) knotted it again at 12:24 before Dayter scored another, this time assisted by Maxam at 11:04. Pooler's second of the day pulled the score into a tie for the final time at 10:11 before Prosinski's fifth gave the Wildcats the lead for good at 9:27. 'Wick failed to score on the woman-advantage after a SUNY Poly yellow card at 9:05, opening the door for Maxam's insurance goal at 6:42 to make it 14-12. Knapp's free position conversion at 2:19 to break the century point mark gave the Hawks some hope, but Dayter completed her second half hat trick with 1:29 left, pushing the score to where it ended up at the final buzzer.

Wilson led the Hawks with five points, all of them goals on seven shots, also leading her team with five draw controls. Pooler was right behind at four points on two goals and two assists, scooping a couple ground balls as well. Hedden and Knapp each had three points. The former tallied two goals on three shots and an assist, while the latter had three goals on six shots and two draw controls. Goaltender Ashley Jablonowski (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) had another solid day, making 19 saves over 60 minutes and leading Hartwick in ground balls, at four.

The Wildcats had the lead in every statistical category, starting with a 42-26 advantage in shots (34 to 17 on goal). They had 19 turnovers to Hartwick's 25, 24 ground balls to the hosts' 20, and controlled 22 draws compared to eight. They also converted 14-of-16 clears against the Hawks' 20-of-29.

Prosinski continued her prolific scoring season, leading all players with nine points. She had a game-high five goals on 11 shots, also controlling a game-high 10 draws and scooping two ground balls. Maxam had seven points on two goals and a game-high five assists. Somes led all comers with 16 shots, turning those into four goals. She also caused a game-high four turnovers, had three ground balls, and controlled two draws. Dayter contributed all over the field, scoring three goals on eight shots but also scooping a game-high five ground balls and controlling nine draws.

Hartwick's final regular season game is on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Empire 8 foe Stevens in Hoboken, New Jersey. The winner of the matchup will advance to the conference tournament; it would be the first such berth for Hartwick since 2004.
