NEWBURGH, NY – Tanner Reed's (Unadilla, NY/Unatego Central) third game-winning goal of the season was the difference on Wednesday night in Newburgh, as the Hartwick women's soccer team defeated host Mount Saint Mary, 2-1. The win moves the Hawks to 5-2-1, while the Knights drop to 1-7.
The first shot of the game brought the first goal, with Reed getting the front side of her brace. Dana Caputo (Commack, NY/Commack) served a diagonal off a long free kick, sailing it over the Mount Saint Mary back line and on to the head of Reed, who headed it into the back of the net at 13:30 for the 1-0 advantage. The rest of the half saw just four shots; the Knights took three of those, although only one required a save from Cassandra Robataille (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam). Maggie Rogers (Wharton, NJ/Morris Hills) had Hartwick's shot, which was stopped by Mount Saint Mary's Cyan Scott.
The home side had a shot early on in the 53rd minute, but it was a foul on Robataille in the 61st minute that gave them a prime scoring opportunity via a penalty kick. Chrissy Cannella did not let her chance go to waste, converting at 60:13 to tie the game at one. 'Wick did not waste much time regaining the lead, however, as Reed grabbed her second of the night at 65:52 off another set piece. Caputo played Katie Weaver (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) through; Weaver caught up and unleashed a left-footed cross that touched Gabrielle Kreppein (Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) and ended up on the foot of Reed who put it home for the 2-1 lead. Nicole Chisdak (Vestal, NY/Vestal) had two shots in the 75thminute, but had the first blocked and sent the second wide, and Kreppein had a couple more tries that needed saving in the final ten minutes. Mount Saint Mary's only opportunity to tie the game again came off a corner in the 88th minute, but Alexa Franceschi sent the ball wide.
Reed led all players in shots during her first career multi-goal game, with three (two on target). Chisdak and Kreppein had a pair of shots apiece, and the latter registered her first helper of the year on the game-winner. Weaver and Caputo each picked up their first assist of 2019. Robataille made one save during her fifth win of the season.
Lauren Engel was the only Knight with multiple shots. Cannella, Haley Murphy, Franceschi, and Liz Ellsworth had the others. Goalkeeper Scott made three saves on five chances.
Hartwick had a slim 8-6 shot advantage, 5-2 on net. The Knights had the advantage on corners, though, at 5-2.
The Hawks return to Empire 8 action this Saturday at Houghton, where they will attempt to get their first conference win of the year beginning at 1 p.m.
