Gagnon Makes All-Tournament Team as Volleyball Sweeps Day Two of Lycoming Tournament

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Celia Gagnon (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane) made the first All-Tournament team of her career on Saturday afternoon, as the Hartwick volleyball team earned its first two-win day of the season, beating Alfred State, 3-1, and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, 3-2, on the second day of the Lycoming Tournament. Gagnon finished the tournament with an average of 9.25 kills, 4.5 digs, 2.75 aces, and one block per match. The Hawks went 3-1 over the two days, second only to 4-0 Elizabethtown, and are now 5-3 on the year.

Match One vs. Alfred State (3-1; 21-25, 25-23, 27-25, 23-25)

  • Alfred State jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead, although 'Wick immediately scored four straight points to pull within two. The score held relatively steady until 17-15, when the Pioneers had a 5-0 run, thanks to two kills from Alyssa Fox and two aces and a kill from Kiara Perkins. Hartwick closed to within three, but could not finish the comeback as Alfred State took set one.
  • The Hawks scored the first six points of game two, via kills from Dell Potts (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane) and Maria Sorriento (Troy, NY/Troy) and four Pioneer errors. Hartwick eventually lengthened their lead out to 14-7, forcing a timeout from Alfred State. The break helped a bit, as the Pioneers closed to within 19-17, this time causing a timeout by the Hawks. Hartwick was able to give themselves four set points by taking a 24-20 lead; their opponents took back three of those but Sorriento put an end to any Alfred comeback hopes with a kill, assisted by Kayley Ericson (Franklin, CT/Norwich Free Academy).
  • As the score attests, the third was an evenly played game, with neither team leading by more than two the whole way. Alfred State came back from set points down 24-23 to give themselves their own set point at 25-24, but three straight Hawk points ended the game at 27-25 and set up 'Wick for a four-set victory.
  • Hartwick had a modest 10-6 lead in set four after a Gagnon kill, and eventually lengthened that out to 14-8 thanks to three kills from Toria Betelak (North Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) and one from Colette Maloney (Williston Park, NY/Mineola).
  • The Pioneers would not go quietly, though, winning six of the next seven points to cut their deficit to one. They would eventually take a 20-19 lead after a Perkins ace, but 'Wick got four of the next five and ended the match on a Maloney kill, from Ericson.
  • Maloney had a double-double, leading the Hawks with 14 kills and adding 12 digs. Sorriento had 12 kills and six digs.
  • Gagnon registered eight kills, four aces, four digs, and a solo block.
  • Ericson followed yesterday's 50-assist performance with 39 more in match one today, also contributing with five digs and a kill.
  • This was 'Wick's second ever matchup and second ever win against Alfred State, as they took down the Pioneers, 3-2, last year in the Keuka Tournament.

Match Two vs. Pitt-Bradford (2-3; 12-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-19, 15-7)

  • The Hawks did not put up much of a fight in set one, going down 5-0 and 15-5 before losing 25-12.
  • They kept their composure, however, bouncing back in set two. They took 6-2 and 9-5 leads, although the Panthers would tie it at 12 and then take a 15-13 lead. Hartwick stayed with it, gaining an 18-16 lead on two Gagnon service aces. They went on to lead 23-18 and win the set, 25-22 after Sorriento finished it with a kill.
  • The squads traded 25-19 wins in the next two sets. Pitt-Bradford led 3-0 and mostly maintained that lead the whole way through in set three; Hartwick got it to within one at one point but otherwise never seriously threatened the Panthers. In game four, the Hawks took a 10-6 lead, but Pitt-Bradford stayed with it, closing the gap to one at 16-15. Four straight points at 17-16 gave Hartwick a 21-16 lead; the Panthers won the next three points, but the Hawks took the four after that (including three Maloney kills) for the 25-19 win.
  • 'Wick jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the decisive fifth set, and led 7-5 after twelve points had been played. From there, they took a firm grasp on the match, winning the next six points for a 13-5 lead (including two kills by Gagnon). After the Panthers scored two points off Hartwick errors, kills by Potts and Gagnon gave Hartwick a 15-7 set win and 3-2 match victory.
  • Gagnon led all players with ten kills in the victory, also adding five digs, three aces, and two blocks. Kaitlyn Ludder (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park) was second on the Hawks with eight kills and had two digs.
  • Kiera Walsh (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led the team with 21 digs, while Maloney was not far behind at 17 digs (as well as seven kills).
  • Ericson kept her 20-assist streak up to start the season, with 20 helpers for the eighth straight game, in addition to eight digs.
  • The win evens up the all-time Hartwick-Pitt-Bradford series at 3, with the last matchup coming in 2009 when the Panthers swept the Hawks in the Elmira Tournament.

The Hawks play again on Wednesday, September 11, at home. They take on city rival SUNY Oneonta for their first home match of the year at 6 p.m.
