ONEONTA, NY – The Hartwick women's soccer team bounced back from yesterday's loss against Susquehanna to defeat the Clarkson Golden Knights, 1-0, on Elmore Field on day two of the Mayor's Cup. Gabrielle Kreppein (Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) drew a foul in the box and converted the ensuing penalty at 79:42 for the only goal of the game. Kreppein and Maggie Rogers (Wharton, NJ/Morris Hills) were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances over the last two days. Oneonta defeated Susquehanna, 4-2, in the other women's Mayor's Cup game today, and earned the tournament title with a 1-0-1 record. Hartwick and Susquehanna each finished 1-1-0, but the River Hawks took second via a tiebreaker. Clarkson ended up in fourth, at 0-1-1 on the weekend.
Kreppein had the first significant chance for either side at 5:21, but was stopped by keeper Elyse Green. Hannah Bochniak (Barneveld, NY/Holland Patent) made a bid for her first career goal at 11:35, but sent it wide. Clarkson came even closer just a few minutes later off a free kick, when Danielle Martin hit the crossbar and the Golden Knights could not convert. Kreppein had another opportunity to give the Hawks the lead, at 16:51, when she ended up with the ball on the left side of the box off a cross. She got it past the keeper but was stopped by a Clarkson back, although the ball may have been headed wide of the net.
'Wick had a few more tantalizing chances to send one to the back of the net before the half was up. Shannon Lauko (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W.Baker) made a nice move on a defender and sent one rolling past the keeper at 34:22 and just off the post. Hartwick later earned a corner with under a minute to play. Dana Caputo (Commack, NY/Commack) sent one into the box that Courtney Velho (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) put on target, but Green got her hands up in time and saved it over the crossbar. The Hawks now had another corner with time ticking down under ten seconds. Caputo again found Velho in the box, this time for a header that was blocked along the post by a Golden Knight. Lauko was in prime position to put it home, but her shot was also blocked by a Clarkson player along the goal line. The ball then rolled off to the side of the net where Clarkson kicked it out of play as time ticked to zero.
The Golden Knights had an excellent opportunity just 26 seconds into the second half, but Camryn Careccia drove it over the goal. Hartwick had the next opening when Bochniak sent one towards the twine at 49:09, but Green stopped the ball in its tracks for another save. The Hawks soon created another chance when a long ball resulted in a scramble in the goal area that was stopped, perhaps by an early whistle, when Green jumped on the ball. The game went back-and-forth for the next 30-or-so minutes, with a Katie Ziniti (Chester, NH/Pinkerton Academy) drive going wide at 59:18 providing the only significant chance.
'Wick finally broke through at 79:42. Kreppein was tracking a ball into the penalty area when she was taken down by Green for a foul, causing a penalty kick. She sent the ball into the back of the net soon after, waiting for Green to commit to her right before sending it the other way for a 1-0 lead on Kreppein's first goal of the season. Clarkson's Martin sent a shot wide at 86:43, counting for the only Golden Knight shot in the final 10 minutes.
Kreppein led all players with four shots, two of which went on net, and of course had the game-winning penalty. Bochniak and Lauko had three shots apiece. Rogers did not appear on the stat sheet, but had a dominating performance all day long, stifling Golden Knights and springing Hawks over the full 90 minutes. Cassandra Robataille (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) got back on track in net, commanding her area and grabbing and punching out balls when needed. She did not make a save, but ended up with her 20th career clean sheet for Hartwick, just the third keeper in program history to achieve the mark.
Martin, Alicia Bushey, and Sarah Kohls led Clarkson with two shots apiece. Careccia, Megan Murphy, and Emma Harrigan had one shot each. Martin and Careccia were both named to the All-Tournament team after the day's games ended. Green ended up making seven saves and allowing just the penalty goal.
Hartwick doubled up Clarkson in shots, at 18-9, and had an 8-0 advantage in shots on net. 'Wick also led in corners, 5-2.
The Hawks return to action next on Wednesday, September 11, for their first midweek game of the season. They will travel to Saratoga Springs to take on Skidmore for a late start, at 7 p.m.
