Men’s Swimming and Diving Starts the Year Off With Win at Cortland

Dawson Tupponce was one of three Hawks with two individual wins

CORTLAND, NY – Three Hawks had a pair of individual wins on Saturday afternoon, as the Hartwick men's swimming and diving team began 2020 victorious with a 156-132 victory over host Cortland. The result pushes 'Wick to 8-1 on the season, the same record the team had through nine dual meets last year.

Hartwick started the day off with a win in the 200 medley relay. Brennan Walsh (Westerville, OH/New Albany Plains), Ryan McLoughlin (New Windsor, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes), Reid Sinkinson (Telford, PA/Souderton Area), and Diallo Marshall (Saint George, Antigua & Barbuda/St. Anthony's) teamed up for a time of 1:40.38 in the event.

Marshall was one of the three Hawks with two wins, as he took both the 50 and 100 free, with times of 22.29 and 50.70 seconds, respectively. He was joined in the multi-win club by Dawson Tupponce (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista), who grabbed victory in the 200 free (1:50.52) and 200 fly (2:05.30), as well as a silver in the 100 fly (55.70 seconds). Yury Chernyak (Sidney, NY/Sidney) also had two firsts and a second, winning the 100 breast (1:00.53) and 200 breast (2:15.47) events and touching up in second place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.61.

Nic Canney (Chandler, AZ/Corona del Sol) had the only other Hartwick win on the day, in the long-distance 1000 free with a time of 10:20.78. He also finished third in the 200 fly, touching up in 2:09.46, behind Tupponce in first and Colin Leonard (Slingerlands, NY/Bethlehem) at 2:06.71 in second.

McLoughlin had two individual second-place finishes; he was just three-hundredths of a second behind Chernyak in the 100 breast, finishing in 1:00.56, and he also nabbed silver in the 500 free with a time of 5:05.50. Other unmentioned Hartwick  individual second-place touch-ups came from Walsh in the 100 back (56.95 seconds) and Rowan Poppen-Eagan (Puyallup, WA/Puyallup) in the 200 back (2:06.73).

A team of Javonte Herbert (Houston, TX/Cy Springs), Isaac Waide (East Haddam, CT/Nathan Hale-Ray), Poppen-Eagan, and Kyle Fisher (Oneida, NY/Oneida) were second in the meet-ending 400 free relay, thanks to their time of 3:31.90.

Diver Jordan Leandro (Watervliet, NY/Shaker) had a score of 201.52 in the one-meter event and 195.22 in the three-meter dives.

Hartwick is back at it next Saturday, traveling to Springfield, MA to take on Springfield and Union in a pair of dual meets beginning at 1 p.m.
